We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brianna Toro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brianna , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
With every risk comes growth. Knowing and truly understanding that failure & success both lead to more knowledge & personnel development which we often try to disassociate the two.
The biggest risk that I’ve taken in my career is stepping out of my comfort zone and bet on myself. Figuring out ways on how to navigate my business from behind the chair as a colorist and beyond the chair as a stylist has been a journey and It only just begun. 6 months ago I stepped into the styling side of the industry being editorial , bridal & celebrity pro. I assisted along side a friend who is also in the industry for my first shoot . I most certainly try to self sabotage myself into thinking all I knew how to use was a curling iron, which is completely untrue but At those very moments when I doubted myself because I was to afraid to fail is when I proved to myself that my hands are gold and made to create. That step into the unknown and that step out of fear changed my life for the greater good. I put myself out there each and every moment as opportunity was gravitating towards me. I took opportunities that i thought were above me but people believing in me and my work made me believe that there are no limits to my success. In these past six months I’ve worked with top tier makeup artist , stylist, models , influencers , reality celebrities, brides, & top educators. I took risks to explore things I’ve never done and no longer limiting myself because the risk is most certainly worth the reward

Brianna , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My Name is Brianna Toro some may know me as Don. I’m a colorist at one of the most prestigious salons in New Jersey Bond Salon in Hoboken Nj as well as a hairstylist for editorial , bridal , celebrity Pro & special occasions. I started off in college attending Saint Peter’s university as we know college isn’t for everyone. I always knew I wanted to do something creative , special and , something that really impacts People’s life. I started off at front desk of salons went to hair school and worked my way up being behind the chair as a colorist at the best of the best but that didn’t happen over night. My career elevated me as a person giving me better communication skills , time management, passion and the list goes on . It helped me network showcasing my craft that led me to another passion with in my career. Being a stylist has opened to many doors for me and brought me to tables with so many amazing people. With the upmost gratitude my job is to make people feel confident, beautiful & powerful.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative?
The most rewarding aspects of being an artist would most definitely be seeing how happy and beautiful people feel after you complete a service. The Raw joy is unmatched! Watching these women feel so confident and Invincible with the hair that I did brings me joy each and every time and I’m so grateful .

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One lesson that I’ve had to learn on this journey is be patient with yourself and practice. You’re going to always face trail and tribulations but that’s how you learn. This industry will not give you instant gratification when you are starting but be kind to yourself. keep finding ways to educate yourself as well as perfect your craft because giving up is not an option. When I started in this industry i worked alongside all these professionals who have been in the industry for years and watching them made me realize i have alot to learn. I dedicated my time to practice and broaden my education as I still do every opportunity I get. Amazing things come to those who never give up and are consistent Patience is a virtue.
