We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianna Tellas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianna below.
Hi Brianna , thanks for joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
Dealing with family can be a touchy subject especially in regards to feeling supported. Before I started my business I’ve always heard your friends and family aren’t going to be your customers. Over the last year and a half I have learned there is truth in that statement. Personally I do have some family and friends that purchase products from, talk my business up, and share my business posts. It can be disappointing feeling like your family and friends don’t support your business because you feel like their supposed to be your cheerleaders and want you to succeed. Starting a business will definitely weed out the people who really support and love you and the people who secretly hate on you because they see something in you they want for themselves. Realizing that you won’t be supported by everyone in your circle of friends and family does hurt, there’s really no way to prepare for the disappointment or hurt but it is a great motivator for you to push yourself. I’ve learned that sometimes strangers support you more than people you’ve know your whole life. Don’t let the lack of support deter you from your goals and hopefully it will push you that much harder to show they can never stop your shine.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brianna I am 27 years old and I’m the owner of Killer Bee Cosmetics. I started my business 2 years ago and we sell products for men and women catering to people of color. A majority of our products are vegan or animal cruelty free. I’m a true girly girl and I love make-up, I started my own YouTube channel doing differently tutorials. I noticed that there was a lack of products made specifically to cater to people of color. My goal with my business is to create products prioritized for people of color but, not excluding anyone else. I hope to be able to inspire women especially black women to go after whatever it is in life they want and no there’s no limit.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For me I’ve found that Pop Up shops are a great way to get my business out there to different people who may not have heard of Killer Bee Cosmetics. Pop up shops are a lot of work but it gives you a chance to make business connections and share your products with potential customers.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Recently I’ve made a decision to revamp my business. I realized my color scheme, packaging and website may not be as appealing to my potential customers as it was to me. I changed my color scheme to something lighter not as dark, I’ve been switching up my packaging to make them appear more desirable. I changed the layout, colors, and concept of my website along with my logo. It was a change that was needed and so far I’m happy with the results.
