We were lucky to catch up with Brianna Ortiz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brianna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I taught myself how to paint in 2015 as an outlet of expression and healing as a domestic violence survivor. Knowing what I know now, I could have attended art educational courses in the community or at an institution to speed up my learning process but, I was determined to learn on my own and didn’t have the finances at the time. Knowing your colors and how to mix properly, finding comfort in holding a paint brush with a steady hand, controlling the pressure when applying the brush or tool to a canvas and scaling images by eye are all great essential skills. I have a busy schedule outside of my art career so finding the time to learn new things can be an obstacle.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello all, My name is Brianna, and I am a self-taught visual artist located in Dallas, TX. I have been painting since 2015 and have been showcasing my work since 2017 in different states and cities. I started painting after getting out of a domestic violent relationship and found a lot of comfort in creating and started to invest in art supplies, a lot of art supplies. I primarily paint on stretched canvas but, also enjoy creating on different pieces of clothing, walls and furniture. In 2021 I decided to take what I’ve learned over the years and use my knowledge to be a positive influence in my community and instruct at paint and sip parties, private art classes to all ages, and paint part-time at the top of the Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas. I’m most proud of my determination and the goals I’ve reached especially during the days I felt like giving up. I’ve learned so much about myself in this journey as a professional artist and I couldn’t think of a life without it.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building an audience on social media is challenging and can be discouraging when you create a great piece of work or timelapse video and you get a few likes or no followers in return. I know a lot of my fellow artists can agree on the algorithm being confusing and against us at times but, it’s important to stay consistent the best you can and always stay genuine to you and your craft and the right audience will like and follow you. I will say I have more supporters than I use to have when I first started to post online but, I’m hoping to gain more exposure as I share my work and journey on social media.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s extremely satisfying when you finish a painting, and you apply a varnish. It all begins with an idea, and you get lost in this creative process using your hands and emotions simultaneously to paint something you first visualized in your head so when you finish and varnish the canvas it’s almost like closing a chapter. It’s rewarding to create something from start to finish and that same piece of art gets sold.
