We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianna Murphy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianna below.
Brianna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am extremely happy as a business owner! I don’t think L.Y.M. would still be as successful if I wasn’t. If I’m being real, there have been plenty of times during the building of the salon that have made me question my decision, but I think that’s natural Opening your own business is scary, but exciting, process and there’s a ton of different things that factor into that. So naturally, you tend to want to run back to what’s comfortable and familiar. I’ve always said that if something happens and I have to close my doors, I will still be so proud! I can truly say that I gave 110% and I went for it. I am thankful for all the high and lows of building our brand and I am so happy that we stuck by it. We have learned so much along the way to continue to help us grow into what L.Y.M. has become and what the brand has in store for the future!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I wanted to work for the FBI so badly growing up, but while I was going to school, something in me changed. I loved doing hair for my family and friends and thought to myself, why not try beauty school? After my first night, I was hooked! I knew I was heading down the right path, but I also wanted more. My plan was already bigger than beauty school and I had immediately set goals for myself to achieve more in the industry. I wanted to be a business owner! So years later, I chased my dream and decided to make it a reality. That’s when I opened L.Y.M. I love what I do and all the avenues it brings. Besides working behind the chair, there are so many outlets in the beauty industry one can venture into. I love helping our clients achieve their ultimate hair goals and also mentoring young stylist growing in their newly found career. The people around me are truly some of the greatest parts of this entire journey.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
There have been many lessons that I’ve had to unlearn or grow from over the years in my career. The big one, for me, was setting boundaries and limits. I wanted to make sure I was accessible at all times and that just isn’t something thats either healthy or sustainable. Not only for yourself, but also the client as well. You also simply may not always connect with the client behind your chair, and that’s ok! The energy for both you and the client needs to be strong and positive. You also simply may not be the right stylist for them and thats where networking can really come in handy, because you can refer them to someone and that stylist just might do the same for you down the road. There is so much opportunity in our industry and the right client will always find their way to you!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I literally opened my salon with 1 client! I wanted to go all in right away and know that if I didn’t succeed, at least I could say I tried and gave it a shot. There were many times where I wanted to go back to my comfort zone working a 9-5. Thats when I had to get creative and find new ways to bring clients into the salon and show them what L.Y.M. is all about! I knew that my big fear was being comfortable and I knew I was meant to keep going and working hard. Failing wasn’t going to happen in my eyes. I learned different perspectives and growth in the industry and I’ve had many mentors along the way motivating me to continue excelling. That support has really helped me achieve success the last 6 years while opening my eyes towards creating new goals for the future of our brand as well.
