We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brianda Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brianda below.
Brianda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
One of the kindest things someone has ever done for me is simply care for me, both emotionally and physically. As someone who naturally takes on the role of caregiver, and who grew up without much emotional support, setting boundaries has always been a challenge- even now as a professional therapist. I tend to prioritize others’ needs above my own, often at the expense of my well-being. Over time, I began to recognize how deeply this unhealthy pattern was affecting my daily life- especially when I internalized the weight of others’ struggles. Eventually, it led to emotional exhaustion, and, ironically, to letting down the very people that were important to me.
Growing up without strong attachments or role models who offered safety and emotional connection, I didn’t fully grasp the significance of those experiences. It wasn’t until much later, as an adult and mental health advocate, that I began to understand just how vital they are to a person’s well-being. I now deeply value the power of feeling safe, heard, and seen; I’ve made it my mission to help others cultivate those experiences in their own lives.
One thing I’ve learned through all of this is that, like anyone else, I feel discomfort when faced with the unfamiliar. I’ve come to understand that even in my role as a therapist, I’m not exempt from needing support and care. So when my partner, friends, or others check in on my mental and physical well-being, it never goes unnoticed. At first, I might feel a little vulnerable or uneasy with the attention, but more often than not, it brings tears to my eyes. It’s a powerful reminder that I, too, am deserving of the same care I so often give to others. Simple gestures like mood check-ins, a warm meal, or a thoughtful massage mean the world to me.

Brianda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a licensed therapist based in Texas, offering counseling services in English, Spanish, and Spanglish. I specialize in supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, and identity exploration—particularly youth and young adults within the BIPOC community. My path into the counseling profession began after my divorce, during a time when I sought therapy for myself. Just a few sessions in, I became acutely aware of how much counselor-client compatibility matters. That experience sparked a thought: “I can do this—and I can do it better.” From that moment on, I knew I had found my career.
In addition to individual therapy, I co-host a youth group where I get to express my creativity and connect with teens on a meaningful level. I’m also a co-host of the Latinas Talkin’ Therapy podcast, where we aim to raise mental health awareness within the Latinx community through candid conversations and shared experiences. My dedication to mental health advocacy also extends to my role as an ambassador for Austin Latinas Unidas, where I engage with the community through outreach and educational efforts. Recently, I’ve also begun presenting on mental health awareness at schools, nonprofit organizations, and community agencies.
What sets me apart as a therapist is the genuine connection I cultivate with my clients. From the very first session, they often sense the sincerity and transparency I bring, which helps lay a strong foundation of trust and openness. I also weave in humor, creativity, and a thoughtful attention to detail in my sessions. It has even been shared with me frequently that my clients appreciate my directness and authenticity- qualities that resonate deeply and are received with openness. All of these elements work together to build meaningful, lasting therapeutic relationships.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back in time, I’d choose this profession all over again. My journey of self-discovery has only strengthened my passion and commitment to this work. If anything, I wish I had started processing my own trauma sooner!
I feel deeply aligned with my specialty- supporting teens, BIPOC individuals, and first- and second-generation individuals. The opportunity to raise awareness within my cultura and connect with those who resonate with my experiences has been more fulfilling than I could have imagined. My drive to continue this work is based on my ability to provide resources, education, and access. I hope this passion shines through in my work, which I believe it already has opened doors to exciting opportunities like my podcast and other community-driven initiatives.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Right now, the most effective way I’ve grown my clientele is by authentically expressing myself and showcasing my talents online. When I actively create content for my website or social media platforms, my excitement is authentically shown in the results. It also keeps me grounded: I remind myself that not every post, blog, episode, etc. will be a hit. However, each one reflects who I am and what I enjoy.
