Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Briana Severine. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Briana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
My mentor and boss in the field of Psychosocial/Psychiatric Rehabilitation was Pete Linnett of the Life Adjustment Team. Pete was a fantastic mentor, boss, person, and advocate for those with chronic and persistent mental illness. I came to work for him right out of graduate school. He saw the importance of developing people personally and professionally. . He spent countless hours with me helping me grow as a young adult so that I would be more effective at supporting clients. The clinical model that Pete developed has been the foundation of my clinical practice as well as my Northstar in my personal life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Addiction Counselor, and Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner. I have been in the mental health field over 25 years and have a passion for helping those that struggle with serious mental illness. I have worked in the Psychosocial/Psychiatric rehabilitation for many years both at the Life Adjustment Team and in private practice. A few years ago, I took the leap and starting building a team at Sanare Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Denver, Colorado.
We at Sanare work with our clients in the real world. We provide direct therapeutic support in completing the tasks and responsibilities that our clients need help with. We work with clients across what we call the 7 domains of functioning which include things like: executive functioning skills, job preparation and support, social skills and development. We believe that people can learn to live well when their level of support is appropriate.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met my business partner Ali Pierucci while we were both contracting for a psychiatry practice in Denver. We had both recently moved to the state, me from California and her from DC. We quickly realized that we shared many of the same values in working with clients that have more serious illness. We worked together with clients in a complimentary pattern: Ali provided the individual therapy and I provided psychosocial rehabilitation. We saw that working as a team was very beneficial in helping our client achieve stability, activity, and productivity.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I believe that the core of my strategy for growing clientele is relationships. I have tried really hard over the last 15 years in Colorado to build as many professional relationships as possible. I know that there are more modern ways of marketing such as SEO, social media, etc but I believe that in the helping professions human connection is paramount. Most of our referrals come from other therapists or psychiatrists who have a client, client’s family, friend, or family member who need our type of support. With a referral built on a known relationship I believe that allows clients the bravery and trust needed to reach out and vulnerably ask for help.
