We were lucky to catch up with Briana Dixon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Briana , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Anxiety gave me my business name, Breathe Easy. I remember starting to feel it creep over me during my freshman year of high school. At that time, I didn’t know that’s what was happening, but I had plenty of time to figure it out since it stuck around throughout high school and college.
Right before graduation, I learned about mindfulness and knew it was highly recommended for easing anxiety. So, to include more of it in my life, I started a consistent meditation and yoga practice. I quickly noticed that the more relaxed I was, the easier it was to breathe, and that feeling became one of my favorite aspects of the practice.
Anxiety can cause shallow breathing and shallow breathing makes you feel more stressed and tense. I’d been shallow breathing for years, not knowing it was contributing to my anxiety. So imagine my surprise upon discovering that at any moment, simply taking deep breaths can drastically reduce my stress. I’d found a new love for the sense of calm that flowed through me just from breathing, and for the fact that the more relaxed I was, the easier deep breathing was.
Since the ultimate goal of my business services, marketing copywriting, content writing, and strategizing, is to reduce the stress of business owners by increasing their profits, I felt that “Breathe Easy” was perfect. It speaks to my mission and the outcomes my ideal customers desire— to sit back and relax, while a skilled expert, aka me, works to help them reach their business goals.
The more they relax, the easier it is to take full, deep breaths and stay relaxed, which provides both professional and personal benefits. Lastly, the name Breathe Easy speaks to how I prioritize putting the same effort and energy into caring for my mind and body that I put into pursuing profit. I feel they’re both equally essential. Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Briana Dixon, Bri for short, and I’m a certified yoga teacher and digital marketer. I got my first marketing internship in 2017 and while I wasn’t completely sold on the marketing industry yet, I seemed to keep gravitating towards it. Nearly all of my jobs in college were marketing, and the more experience I gained, the more I loved it and could see myself doing it long term.
However, I did notice a huge lack of integrity in some of the companies I worked for. I couldn’t shake the feeling that the marketing industry needed more genuine people who cared more about producing positive results with their craft than they did about money.
As a result, I created Breathe Easy Digital Marketing, which provides copywriting, content writing, strategy, and branding services, specifically for websites, emails, landing pages, sales pages, social media, and blogs. These high quality services address areas of businesses that the owners either want to grow or areas that are completely stagnant. I achieve this with a mindful approach that helps them deepen their connection with their customers and prospects.
I’m most proud of my commitment to continuous growth. I see any obstacles or “failures” as opportunities to not only improve my skills but to become a better version of myself overall. I also take pride in the fact that I’ve never missed a deadline before, even though this seems to be a common problem in this field.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I used to think my biggest business fear was having my work stolen by a client, until it happened to me. I also thought this client was my biggest one yet and that I had been given the perfect opportunity…. WRONG. Not only was I not paid for the extensive amount of work I delivered, but when I demanded to be paid, the company attempted but failed to intimidate me.
However, I was in disbelief because I found their actions to be rather cruel and they concealed their intentions very well. I thought it was the start of something new. I was so excited to see a startup company grow from its early stages and contribute to it as well. Especially since they sold me a percentage of the company as compensation, only to later say that I’m not entitled to it. I thought this was my breakthrough after finding myself in several unfortunate events, but nope. I contemplated giving up, but I kept asking myself “what would I do? Pick a job that I’d eventually start to hate & work it for the rest of my life with a company that probably wouldn’t give a crap about me outside of the overworking and underpayment they’d subject me to? Nah”
Plus, as I stated earlier, the industry could use more ethical companies. And honestly, if I did ever give up, it would haunt me for the rest of my life and become my biggest, most painful regret. I felt like a failure when this first happened but would soon realize that I’d only be a failure if I actually quit.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I was in college being trained for a marketing position at Wyndham Destinations. As part of our training, our manager showed us a YouTube video titled ‘SHARK MINDSET | One of the Best Speeches Ever by Walter Bond’. It changed my entire outlook. After watching, I started to truly believe in my talents and abilities. I also realized the strong desires we have on our hearts are meant to be relentlessly pursued and taking consistent, focused action will get us where we want to go. Life is all about perspective and sometimes a quick adjustment can change everything.
