We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brian Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We created a beer called Stars On The Ceiling with Shipyard brewery based off of a song I wrote with Scott Avett (The Avett Brothers)
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brian Thompson but people know me by my artist name, Stealing Oceans. My career started in Nashville, TN where I was signed to Starstruck Entertainment alongside Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton. I toured rigorously for yrs before leaving Starstruck and moving out west. I’ve maintained a publishing deal for writing music full time but I took a couple yrs off from the artist side of things after leaving the label because the business side of things disconnected me from why I started making music in the first place. After some time off, I’m back working on my next project for release and looking forward to hitting the road again soon!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The connection I get to make with people through my music. There’s nothing more rewarding than someone coming up to me at the merch booth after the show and telling me a story about how my music played a positive role in their life. I love connecting with people on the road and it’s been amazing having some of those fans still riding with me even after I took some time off!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Mental health. It’s so important to take care of ourselves because that puts us in a position to help others. Writing music is a form of therapy for me that helps me take care of my own mental health. Releasing that music and using my platform to advocate for mental health is the payoff and the most fulfilling aspect of my career.
