We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brian Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I came up with The BlueHeart Foundation 334 in 2014 simply after watching my mom give back to less fortunate people, making care kits for prisoners in Julia Tutweiler Prison for women back in the day, to just making gifts for the elderly in nursing homes, my mom generally gave me the spark to do something for people. Once i created The BlueHeart Foundation 334 i had no idea that it would turn into something so positive and worthwhile. My intentions were to create a Foundation that helps less fortunate families in Montgomery, Alabama, not knowing that what i have created has turned into an award winning Foundation built on Inspiring Others To Be Great. There are a lot of nonprofit groups in Montgomery, but what makes me stand out from the rest is the fact that I’m always coming up with crazy ideas and projects that seem to catch the eye of the public while grasping the attention of others. Nobody ever considered doing a $100 free grocery giveaway every month for a lucky person, nobody ever considered doing free school supply giveaways in honor of children who passed away from a childhood disorder. I simply do projects and events that nobody considers and i think thats a unique approach that i made on the community as a whole.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brian “Blue” Smith i’m a 2009 Graduate of Alabama State University, i received my Masters in Healthcare Administration from Strayer University in 2021, and currently working on my Doctorate in Business Administration from Columbia Southern University. I’m a proud member of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity Inc, Phi Beta lambda Business Fraternity Inc, Prince Hall Mason (Hamilton Lodge No.365), Prince Hall Shriner (Shaaban Temple No.103) Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc (Alpha Pi Omega Graduate Chapter), Order Eastern Star (Alonza MItchell Chp No.636. I got into community service work by watching my mom help others, which put a spark in me to help those that need to be helped. I would say my most proud moment was getting recognized back in 2018 as The Honda Battle of the Bands Power of Dreams Award Winner, which was presented to me in front of 89,000 people in the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. I was awarded a check, which i donated to my high school band (Carver High School Marching Wolverine Band) for new instruments and uniforms. I want people to understand that The BlueHeart Foundation 334 is here to help less fortunate families not only in Montgomery, Alabama but throughout the United States. My mission for this Foundation is to simply INSPIRE OTHERS TO BE GREAT. INSPIRE kids to give back to there community, INSPIRE people to help the next person, INSPIRE people to pay it forward and do something to make somebody day, INSPIRATION can go a long way, and all it takes for a person to believe is INSPIRATION.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
What helped me build my reputation within my market is the fact that im actually out here helping those that need help. I was once homeless, i was once unemployed, i was once worried about my next meal, i was once worried about not being cared about, i was in and out of jail, so i personally know what my people are going through. Sometimes you have to go through something to understand something, and im a firm believer of that.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I can remember it was this one lady i was working with when i was doing a breast cancer raffle for breast cancer survivors. Her neighbor nominated her for the raffle and she won. So when i made the call to her to inform her that she won the raffle, she broke down on the phone, saying that she never won anything in her life which made me tear up because here is this lady who iv’e never met in my life fought breast cancer and won, and i made her day by calling her saying that she’s our raffle winner. So when i met her in person i teared up because this lady has been through a lot, and for her to survive cancer, survive chemo, and be here talking to me in person made my day. It was an emotional/tearful meeting but i was glad that my Foundation was able to brighten up here day and put a smile on her face.
