We were lucky to catch up with Brian Michael Fuller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brian Michael, appreciate you joining us today. Can you take us back in time to the first dollar you earned as a creative – how did it happen? What’s the story?
When I was living in Nashville, I started really learning how to produce music on a computer. A good friend of mine paid me $75 per song to produce an album for him. It seemed like a lot of money at the time, because I was just delivering pizzas and working at restaurants but four months later once the project was done, I realized how little money that was. In the end, it was a killer learning experience and I’m still proud of that album. I would totally do it all over again. Maybe charge him $80 per song instead lol
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Over the last 6 years, I have been composing and producing music for various TV Networks all over the globe. I had the honor of having my music on networks such as BBC, Fox, CBS, MTV, E!, Spike, Showtime, OWN, BET, France 5, ProSieben Maxx, RTL 5, Nickelodeon, History, Discovery, Animal Planet, and A&E.
My passion is to tell stories through music and sound. Helping other creatives realize their dreams through various mediums and ideas is extremely rewarding from music soundtracks to sound design and everything in between. Starting from an empty space and painting it with new and innovate sound is a reward in it’s own right.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Multiple friends of mine and I have launched YouTube channels in the past that have been pretty successful. I’m actually currently working on a new YouTube channel now where I am teaching people how to use video game software called the “Unreal Engine”, which is made by Epic Games, the creators of the extremely popular game, “Fortnite”. As a composer and sound designer, I’ve always wanted to push the boundaries of telling stories with audio and music and video games is a great way to do it. Not to mention the future definitely belongs to artists who are computer friendly. With all of the new and rapidly developing advances in A.I., I think it’s wise for creative artist of all disciplines to really try to learn as much about computers as possible so we can use them as tools to expand our own creativity and not look at them as our enemies. I launched the channel about 45 days ago and it’s already starting to get good traction. The key to building social media success is constant content. It’s a simple formula, but it’s true. People like to connect with consistently delivered content. We like routine! If you want to build your network, do it weekly no matter what. Let people know they can come to you for new and fresh insights weekly.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are so many amazing resources available for the creative artist today. As a constant learner, I’m always binge learning new things whether it be articles online or new books. A couple years ago, I came across a book that really changed my life. It was called “The Power of Who” by the author, Bob Beaudine. It’s an extremely insightful take on networking, something every artists should master. This book really empowered me to explore the network of people that I already knew, instead of starting cold and it was amazing how many people in my current circle I was able to connect with and build powerful relationships with that were mutually beneficial. I really wish I would’ve read that book many years earlier than I did.
