We recently connected with Brian Head and have shared our conversation below.
Brian, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks I’ve ever taken was to leave my corporate job of 25 years to pursue my passion for real estate investing. I’ve been investing in real estate for over 20 years, but it wasn’t until my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer that I was finally able to take the leap and pursue my dream for our family. She is cancer free now, but that event has forever changed our family and how we pursue each day.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m the Founder of Head Start Equity, a real estate private equity firm that provides passive investment opportunities in primarily value-add multifamily properties. I have 20+ years of experience investing in real estate. I earned my BBA degree in Finance from UTSA and worked in the financial services industry for 25 years, 10 of which were as a licensed investment advisor and stockbroker. I’ll be launching my podcast called Wealth & Whiskey soon where listeners can learn about different ways to build wealth and get an up close opportunity to check out some awesome distilleries. Lastly, I have a real estate investing coaching program where we teach everyday folks how to get their real estate investing journey started. I reside in San Antonio, TX with my wife and 2 daughters.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
About 17 or so years into my real estate investing journey, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately my wife is now cancer free. But, it was at that point our family had to reflect on what we want for our future. I decided to start investing in bigger residential real estate deals in order to scale the business faster. Fast forward to now and there have definitely been some bumps in the road but armed with those learning lessons, the future looks bright both personally and professionally.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Whenever I am networking and meet a new person, I don’t look at them as a potential investor, I look at them as a potential new friend. I know that sounds a little idealistic, but it’s truly how I approach growing my business. When my time is up, I want to remembered as a genuine person who really cared about his investors and put them first.
