Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brian Goins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brian, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
One of the craziest things that happened was during an outdoor photo shoot in Dallas Texas. It was a night time photoshoot with me and a model and while we were shooting. This big 6’10” homeless look guy who looked high as a kite, walked up on us asking if he could use my camera to take photos of “ME” and not her. I was a little scared because he was getting a little aggressive but since the model was with me I couldn’t show it. He kept trying to grab my camera and asking if she was my wife. Dude finally got the hint disappeared into the night, but heart jumping out of my chest because I didn’t know what he going to do.
Brian, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brian Goins owner of B.Goins photography LLC I’m a traveling photographer.
I’ve been doing photography and videography off and on since 1996.
Professionally in the past 4 years.
I started out with photography by accident. When I was in high school ( Cooper High school Abilene Texas), I was the class comedian and my teachers were trying to figure out what to do with me and so they put me in photography class. That’s where I learned about how to shoot and develop film and then I was hooked on photography after that.
My first camera was a Nikon Pronea 600i that a friend let me have in 1997 and then I to Sony in mid 2000’s. Then back to Nikon in which I currently use till this day.
After high school I started taking photos at music venues all across the country. My mom gave me her video camera and I would film weddings, music videos, car shows etc.
Fast forward to 2004-06when I lived in Sacramento, was a dj in a band slash photographer and I would take photos of local artists at major venues and events.
From 2006 to 2012 I was living in Austin Texas and this was when I started to get my name out. I shot photos for major hip hop artists, college events.
I’m currently in the Dallas area and I specialize and love shooting Fashion, portrait, sports, family, and travel photography. I primarily deal with fashion models because I love to make people look phenomenal. I consider myself artist with my photography. I paint pictures through my lens and bring it to life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn how to communicate. I was very bad in the past with expressing myself and letting people know how I felt with certain situations.
It started when I was kid in school and I would ask the teacher a question and they would talk down on me like “ You don’t know the answer?” So for many years If I had an idea or suggestion, I wouldn’t use my voice if I had an opinion. Over the years I’ve changed a lot.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Owning a business you have to be resilient. Owning a photography business you have to plan the shoots, find the locations for the shoots, communicating with the client to let them know where when and what time the shoot is going to be, setting up equipment, paying for the venue, taxes. Etc.
