We were lucky to catch up with Brian Goddard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I have been around music most of my life due to my brother having his own recording studio at my grandmom garage. He showed me audio engineering when I was a teenager. When I graduated from high school, I went to New York City and took my education to NYU where I fined-tune my craft to record and mix at the highest level possible. I worked at a couple of studios during school to get the real world experience as an intern doing post-production for TV because they didn’t have me sit in front of a desk answering phones all day. Once I finished with school, I came out to LA and my life changed completely.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, my name is Brian Goddard, and I’m an audio engineer. Born in New York and raised in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey. I jump started my career on the East Coast, where I decided it was time for new challenges and opportunities. In 2015, I made the move to Los Angeles, CA to join his longtime friend Stan Greene, CEO of Arketek Music, as an assistant mixing engineer. This gave me the opportunity to invest the knowledge I learned over the years to not only record and mix records for upcoming artists, but also work with notable names such as, Busta Rhymes, Money Jezus, Jaden Smith, Big Sean, O.T Genesis, just to name a few. I have my own studio located in DTLA, where I continue to mix projects and provide Dolby Atmos for artists and labels.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the fact that you start having a following where people will pay you for your work. That was my favorite moment, when I started seeing my invoices being paid in full and people writing reviews about my service. I would never have thought it would all happened from a laptop with an M box pro and pro tools.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Last year on Halloween I was let go from my part-time job due to the restaurant closing down, I finished all the projects for the year and I had some work here and there but nothing crazy, I lost most of my saving trying to survive till the music industry started back up after the holidays. I had to pivot real fast, or I would be out of a studio. I ended up landing a part-time job while I was learning and getting certified in Dolby Atmos to hold me over. Furthermore, I end up quitting like 2 months later because it wasn’t the job for me. Starting 2023 bad was not part of the plan at all, so now I keep a backup just in case things slow down because being a business/creative is not easy, it will humble you for sure.
