We recently connected with Briah Christia and have shared our conversation below.
Briah , appreciate you joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
For the majority of my time on this Earth, I have felt misunderstood mainly by my peers. With the success that I have had as a basketball player and even now as a young adult and maturing into a woman, most people have think that I am mean, arrogant, cocky, or full of conceit. With people feeling this way or misunderstanding my character, it was easy for people to misunderstand my work or who I really am as a person because they didn’t know my heart or the place in which I was coming from while creating when it came to my intentions. I was always aware that people felt that I acted or was a certain way and I always wondered why. However, as I’ve gotten older I have realized that what people think of me or who they think I am has nothing to do with me and is completely out of my control. I really have no desire to prove myself or my intentions to people that I don’t know or have no desire to get to know me. The people that love me love me because they understand who I am and what I stand for and those who don’t, that fine too. My world keeps on spinning.
Briah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am Briah Michelle Christia and I pride myself on being me in every which way possible. I am a podcast creator who values not just creating just to create but the authenticity of creating to help as many people as humanly possible with my own experiences. For many years of my life, I played the wonderful game of basketball that provided me with relationships, experiences, and life lessons that will last me for a lifetime. However, in the year of 2021, I hung up my jersey and decided to pivot into other areas of my life in which that meant whatever God had for me. Deciding to no longer play basketball forced me to find an identity outside of Briah the “basketball player” and this is something that I still struggle with today. My podcast [undergoing a rebrand], currently named Box and One: The Podcast is a podcast that sheds light on the conversations that we either have a daily basis or find a difficulty in discussing. My objective for creating Box and One: The Podcast was to be able to help as many people as possible going through life’s different situations and even difficulties. With my experiences, I have been able to guide and help people from all walks of life; even though who misunderstood me at some point in time.
I am most proud of my resilience, strength, and determination. To have been able to rebirth myself after playing the game of basketball that was so near and dear to my heart and being able to find a heartbeat within my world after not knowing what I would do after no longer playing depicts my toughness, adaptability, and fortitude.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal and mission that continues to drive my creative journey is not even the simple act of creating. What continues to drive my creative journey is simply just the people and my peers. There has been a number of times when I wanted to actually just shut down my Box and One: The Podcast and simply just focus on school and coaching basketball. However, every time I felt as if I wanted to discontinue the podcast, there was somebody that always came up to me asking me “When is the podcast coming back?” or “Keep going. I love the podcast.” The idea that I am actually helping people with different situations in their lives continues to drive me and my creative process. Being able to help people in which ever way possible is rewarding and extremely fulfilling.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Anything in life that you are trying to build requires consistency and mental fortitude. I built the audience for Box and One: The Podcast on social media simply by actually being creative and consistent. Being a creative actually enables you to be creative. You must create different forms of content that will strike interest and continue to push your work and your brand. And you must not only create content, but consistently create and post content. Even the slightest or smallest piece of content is still content. My advice to anybody starting to build a social media presence would be to simply just post your content, no matter what it is. Additionally, know that there will be days that you don’t want to post and that is where the mental fortitude comes into action. We spend most of our time these days on social media anyways. So why not take 10-30 minutes of your day to contribute to your work and your brand.
