We recently connected with Bria Spaulding and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bria, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Funny enough, my name came to me on accident. I used to play basketball in college for a few years and some of my teammates referred to me as “Young Bull”. That name stuck with me for my first year and I changed my Instagram name to “BriTheBull”. After I stopped playing basketball I never changed my Instagram name. So fast forward, there was a guy who reached out to me and said ‘Hey, I want you to host an event for me!” I said “Okay! Sure!”. Initially I though the was going to put “Bria” on the flyer as my name but he put my Instagram name “BriTheBull” and it stuck! At first I thought it was weird but after awhile I started falling in love with it! The bull signifies strength, patience and abundance which are things I love being associated with! I do believe that everything happens for a reason so now I am happy with my business name!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a DJ/Host! I have been hosting for almost a decade now (WOW!). I started hosting while I was in undergrad at Central State University. I started hosting because a host for an event that we were throwing never showed up and we were in crunch time so I had to step up and rock the mic! I never thought that I would be as good as I was however, it worked out for the best. I used to joke with my mom and tell her how funny it was that when I was younger I was always in trouble in school for talking too much….now I am getting paid to talk hahahahaha. But, yea, it was a great experience. Now with me being around DJs for so long I naturally started picking up the craft. I would watch them day in and day out learning their scratch cadences, listening to transitions, etc. So around the time Covid19 came I purchased my first DJ board and downloaded serato. Granted I only had 30 songs on my serato but I was rocking out in my apartment! It felt right and also gave me an avenue to expand my hosting style as well since I was DJ’ing as well. Everything for me just fell into my lap and I have been riding the wave ever since. I love what I do though and wouldn’t change it for anything.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My presence on social media comes and goes to be quite honest with you because I do so many other things in life that social media isn’t always my focus. However, one of the things I have ALWAYS stayed true to on social media is being authentically me. All of my content is based on things I like or my real life. I will post “day in the life” videos or recap videos of my events so my followers can see what I am doing. I tried to get into the whole tik tok fashion thing and realized it wasn’t for me. I used to dress like a soccer dad when I was younger so trying to stay up on the latest fashion isn’t really my thing. But one of the things I do faithfully is wear a block owned business for all of my events and post them on my page. It hasn’t taken off quite yet but I do believe that if we can spend thousands on the name brands we can spend a few hundred with our brothers and sisters. So I would say to those building a social media presence: Find your thing! Also, your thing doesn’t have to be the trending thing. It just has to be YOU!
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons that I had to unlearn EARLY in this business is that you can just show up to be good. Now for some people they can just show up and be awesome at what they do. However, for me, it didn’t work like that. I always felt like the underdog and like I had something to prove. Don’t get me wrong I was good when I first started but I was never satisfied with myself. What I do is a craft whether that’s DJ’ing or Hosting. Again, some people don’t see it like I do but I genuinely care about the product I put out. I always try to push the envelope with my craft by just doing research and thinking of drops or mixes that showcase who BriTheBull is.
