We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bria Knight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bria, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My journey of entrepreneurship began with a simple act of love—preparing my grandmother’s hair and makeup for church every Sunday. She was more than just a beloved matriarch; she was a beacon of beauty, talent, strength, expression, elegance, and class. Her influence shaped the person I am today, instilling in me an unbreakable connection with God and inspiring my artistry as a form of ministry.
The passing of my grandmother left a profound void in my life—a pain I transformed into purpose. I decided to channel my grief into creating a business that offers both aesthetic and spiritual transformations. My artistry is my ministry, a way to heal, uplift, and serve others while honoring her legacy. She was my muse, my inspiration, and the reason behind III. VI. Artistry. Through this journey, I aim to empower others to find their own beauty, strength, and spiritual connection, just as she did for me.
The business of being a makeup artist is often misunderstood as simply playing in makeup, but it involves much more. There is a deep psychology behind servicing individuals, often strangers, and providing an experience that leaves clients feeling satisfied and eager to return. A makeup artist must quickly read and understand their client, sometimes within seconds, and translate their vision into a tangible, beautiful result. This process is an art of manifesting and visualizing, tailoring each look to meet the client’s unique needs. Beyond the technical skill, makeup artistry is also a form of therapy for many; it addresses insecurities and offers a safe space for clients to relax and express themselves. Creating a calming atmosphere, knowing when to speak or listen, and sensing unspoken discomfort are crucial skills. Ultimately, makeup artistry is about more than aesthetics — it’s about connection, confidence, and understanding individual stories. I knew that making this a career would allow me to create experiences that were unparalleled.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
“Being a Makeup Artist will not pay the bills…you can’t live off of playing in makeup”, was what someone close to me had told me during the beginning stages of my makeup journey. I was faced with a significant wound of doubt and skepticism from others, particularly when someone told me that I couldn’t do it because what I heard was that they didn’t believe in me or my vision. That kind of negativity was deeply impactful, shaking my confidence and challenging my dreams. However, I’ve transformed that wound into a powerful source of motivation. Instead of allowing that doubt to define me, I’ve used it as fuel to prove not only to others but more importantly to myself that my passion can be lucrative and fulfilling.
Healing this wound involved reclaiming my self-belief and staying true to my vision. I prioritized authenticity and personal fulfillment over conforming to conventional career expectations. Through perseverance and dedication, I’ve created a life and career that align with my values—doing what I love and feeling rewarded simply by existing in the world I’ve built for myself. My story is a testament to resilience, self-trust, and the importance of pursuing what truly matters to me. What was meant to destroy or deter me, led to me forming a business, creating a skincare line, lash line, lingerie and active wear line as well as working with celebrity clients, flying domestically and internationally to work high profile events like New York Fashion Week and so much more.
Had I allowed those words to cloud my vision, I would not have a portfolio of accomplishments that many can only dream of.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I funded my business by leveraging the income from my makeup appointments. I effectively created a sustainable funding source to develop my own line of beauty tools and skincare products. This strategy not only helped me grow the business but also allowed me to address a specific need among clients—those who require more than just makeup application to maintain their beauty routines.
With me identifying a gap in the market, creating solutions, and reinvesting my earnings to expand my offerings, it set me apart from other artists. I worked to ensure that the experience that I was providing was not only tailored but exclusive. This approach not only increased my revenue streams but also positioned me as a comprehensive beauty provider, building trust and loyalty with my clients. Ultimately, I felt that this was a smart way to build a brand that truly understands and meets the needs of its audience.
