We recently connected with Bria Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Bria, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear you experience with and lessons learned from recruiting and team building.
Starting your own firm is never easy. When I first started I started with no one. I started with just by myself and trying to figure out my way. The first year I wanted to see what it would be like before I bring others in with me. When I first decided to bring people in which is first set of people who are still here with me until this day it wasn’t easy. I didn’t know if I was being to harsh, was I not leading right am I being to friendly? All these questions came into play as I am learning to run my own company. The interview process would be a phone screening, than a zoom interview with the team if they passed the phone interview. The team at that time included only me and one other person. Training would include 2 months of tax training. The mistake I made at the time I first started I used to be to friendly and want to hang with them on a personal level as well. I learned by after a while you have to keep business and personal separately. So if I change anything today it would be knowing you can’t mix the two so people can’t misunderstand if your the boss or they friend. You have to keep a fine line with the two.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Bria Harris I am the owner of Impress Tax Service. I got onto this industry by going to school for accounting and graduating at the top of my class in 2015. I used to work for some top firms and decided the money I was making for them I can do myself. After working for a few years and saving up some money I started my own firm in 2018. With lots of discipline I took my company to almost a 7 figure brand. We offer business and personal taxes, cpa, book keeping, credit repair, business credit, starting a business, cash advances during tax time , loans, and much more. We slove a lot of tax related issues for our clients. Clients who don’t know how to mange books well we also assist with that as well. I am most proud being a woman owned business/ minority owned and taking it to another level. For our future followers and clients we hope to leave a impact in the financial world that no one else has. Being a black owned CPA office it works and very proud of our accomplishments.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media and word of mouth has been the best way for new clients. Sometimes people will drive past our office and say we see you opened a new location and they will book us as well!!
Any advice for managing a team?
Managing a team means you have to be ready to create other leaders. You have to be able to create a team so strong that you don’t know who the boss is. If they want to branch off and start there own brand you have to be able to know they left with something they can learn from you in the long run. Managing a team means making sure you team knows they can always count on you and your there for them in any way form or possible!! Maintaining high morals is big in our company we learn lessons everyday to make us a better and stronger team!!
