We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bri Crabtree. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bri below.
Bri, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The Silly Circus Show is a vision for what I did not see in the world. I’ve been watching jugglers and magicians for a very long time, but what I didn’t see was a strong, powerful female character who’s accomplishing skilled feats, who’s making people laugh, and who is bringing it all together into real magic. And real magic is connection and storytelling. I want the audience to experience a state of joy. I want them to tap into that state of flow where they forget about whatever has been bothering them that day and become fully engaged moment to moment during the entire show. It’s a conversation between the performer and the audience. Nothing else exists except what is happening in front of you. And through that flow, I think you can access a state of joy, a state of relief and escape for a little bit.
The goal of the Silly Circus Show is to lead by example. I want to show people that whatever you’re thinking about in your head can come to life. I call it from the page to the stage. I make all the costumes, design original props, develop original tricks, write jokes, and the list goes on and on. I want people to know that you can lead a creative life.
Bri, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was introduced to the circus arts in high school. I met a person who was running a clown troupe, and we would visit children in the hospital. Through this clown troupe, I learned about clowning, costumes, face painting, juggling, and balloon animals. I continued to practice my skills by volunteering at charity events. And when I was in college, I joined the local juggling club. I fell in love with juggling!
Over the years, I have learned to combine my unique comedy with these circus skills to provide an entertaining show for kids, that makes nonstop giggles. I have a 30-45 minute variety show that features juggling, unicycling, magic, and silliness. I also do strolling grounds entertainment at fairs and festivals.
My heart and soul goes into Silly Circus Show, and what you are watching is a culmination of 25 years of experience in circus arts, how to make kids laugh, and how to entertain adults at the same time. I like to say it’s like Mary Poppins meets charlie chaplin meets Sponge Bob squarepants.
My show is unique because there are few women with solo variety shows that demonstrate a variety of skills and acts. I combine physical comedy with verbal comedy to make a truly unique show.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative business is making people laugh, getting to travel all over the world, and meeting other creatives. I also love to create my own material, and think of zany ideas and bring them to life. I have constructed giant toothbrushes out of foam, a frog puppet with a giant tongue that shoots out of it’s mouth, original magic tricks, and costumes.
It sounds cheesy, but sometimes I fall asleep smiling when I think about something that happened in the show that day. A particular smile from a kid or maybe the audience exploded into laughter when I didn’t expect it. And I’m excited to wake up the next day to do it all again.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation is built on an award winning show, consistency, and being reliable. People want to hire a show that will keep the audience entertained, and make themselves look good. I use audience participation that makes them the star of the show too! Kids love to be themselves, and if I can highlight that, I will use it. I pride myself on excellent communication with the client, showing up early, and going above and beyond in customer service. Some kid’s entertainers do the bare minimum, but I believe in providing a quality service and show that put any doubts to rest. Once you book Silly Circus Show, you know that it’s going to be professional, stress free, and enjoyed by kids and adults.
