We were lucky to catch up with Brett Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brett , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
I founded this company as a physical therapist with a background in personal training and being a strength coach. During my PT clinical rotations, I realized how limiting the traditional insurance based model really was and that I could help someone more as a coach simply because I had more 1-1 time with them.
So coming out of school I opened Barbell Therapy & Performance that blends the two together. There are a ton of very active and fit people out there dealing with injuries that are continuously failed by regular PT simply due to the fact that therapists in that setting don’t have time and might not know or understand this persons fitness demands.
Here at Barbell Therapy, all of our staff physical therapists are also experienced strength coaches with personal accolades in strength in fitness so we really understand how to get people back to 100% with the demands of their sports and activities.
-We spend an hour privately 1-1 with each patient with a PT, no aides, techs, or assistants.
– Every plan of care is completely indivualized. We take an hour to just get to the root cause so we know exactly where we need to go moving forward and this doesn’t involve any cookie cutter exercise plans.
-We see our patients only 1-2x/week because we want to “teach you how to fish”. We record all our sessions for you to take home so you know exactly what to do with your specific exercises…aka no wasted time or effort.
– We implement solutions- not bandaids and offer a 3 visit money back guarantee.
– We are also pioneering the field of regenerative medicine with the latest technology in shockwave therapy and electromagnetic transduction therapy.
– On top of this, we also have a built in fitness training facility where we help athletes and active adults get back to sports in a hybrid PT to performance model, where our coaching staff and physical therapists work together to keep our clientele healthy.
– I personally am also doing a lot in the field with teaching continuing education courses for PTs, am a Coach for the United States Olympic Lifting Team, and also serve as member of the advisory board for the Exercise physiology program at Umass Lowell.
Brett , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Brett Scott, a physical therapist, strength coach, and am the proud owner of Barbell Therapy and Arkitect Fitness. I opened these two businesses because I knew that active individuals, athletes, and people with chronic pain were being underserved by the traditional medical model’s shortcomings.
Through my clinical rotations in traditional insurance based clinics I felt constantly limited by the model and what insurance required from us as providers and felt like I could do more with people simply as a coach because I had more time with them and could work with them much more closely. I also have battled an autoimmune condition of ankylosing spondylitis that traditional medicine left untreated and undiagnosed for three years.
A lot of that has driven me to build a company where we as providers dive deeper into someones root causes for pain and injury, treat them holistically, over deliver on our care, help them navigate the medical model and give them true solutions to their conditions instead of just putting band-aids on top of symptoms for temporary relief.
When someone comes here, there are no cookie cutter home exercise plans, no half assed evaluations, out of date education, or passive modalities like hot packs and stim that are shown by the research to not do anything.
Here, you will leave with a functional diagnosis of whats causing your problems, whats making it worse, what is going to make it better, and what our plan of care will look like. This includes lifestyle management, stress management, ergonomics, nutrition, work out modifications, sleep hygiene protocols, custom self care and home workout routines as well as receiving some of the latest and greatest regenerative technology at an affordable price.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Since starting the company, having a good reputation for myself and my business has always been center stage. It’s my belief that doing good by people and helping them however we can, going the extra mile, on top of delivering world class care is what really will make this company successful in the long term.
For one, we have systems in place where we are checking in with our patients and training clients regularly to keep them accountable, make sure our staff is held accountable, and make sure the clients and staff are aligned on each individual clients goals.
We also practice what we call “unreasonable hospitality”. Every week during our weekly meetings we discuss any of our clients who are going through good times and bad times and figure out something nice we can do for them like sending them something thoughtful for birthdays, loss, celebrations etc.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I like to put this here because I think a lot of people don’t realize that its not just money that makes a business successful. When I started I was renting space inside a strongman gym in Lowell, MA. And when I say renting space…I didn’t even have an actual office constructed yet, just a corner space in a mezzanine area upstairs, a 60 dollar massage table I bought off craigslist, my hands, a bottle of massage cream, my education, and my desire to change the medical field. Seven years later we are a 1.3 million dollar company that has been built off hard work, thinking outside the box, and doing our best by people.
