We recently connected with Brett Hartong and have shared our conversation below.
Brett, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best boss, mentor, or leader you’ve ever worked with.
I’ve had the privilege of working with some outstanding leaders throughout my career, but two individuals truly set the foundation for my journey in cinema and storytelling: my Creative Non-Fiction professors at CSULB, Helen Hood Scheer and Kate Trumbull-LaValle. Both were not only mentors but role models who transformed my perspective on filmmaking and life.
Helen and Kate taught me that with a clear vision, dedication, and solid planning, anyone can bring their voice to the world. Their emphasis on authenticity—telling stories that are genuine and grounded in truth—shaped how I approach my own work and influenced my path forward. Being a Student Aide for both of these inspiring teachers instilled a sense of pride in me that was a turning point. It set a standard in my life, one that continually reminds me to aim higher and embrace storytelling with integrity and representation.
Today, as High School Video Production teacher, I get to pass on what Helen and Kate taught me. Every day, I wake up excited, knowing I’m not just inspiring the next generation of storytellers but also continuing my own journey as a filmmaker. I’m Grateful.

Brett, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Brett Royal Hartong, the founder of Brett Royal Film, a video production company based in Laguna Beach, CA. My journey into strong filmmaking began at California State University, Long Beach, where I studied film with a focus on Documentary and Creative Nonfiction. The art of storytelling through real-life moments captivated me from the start. I teach Video Production at Villa Park High School, which allows me to nurture the next generation of filmmakers, and that dual role—both educator and creator—defines a lot of who I am.
Over half my life, I’ve been crafting weddings, music videos, live performances, documentaries, and commercials for clients across the globe. My specialty is the Wedding Documentary—a cinematic experience that blends the traditional elements of a wedding with the depth of a feature-length film. My approach is all about capturing authentic moments and weaving them into a story that’s as beautiful, emotional, and unique as the couple themselves. I take pride in creating films that allow my clients to relive their wedding day, bringing out the happy tears, laughter, and memories that make these events unforgettable.
What sets Brett Royal Film apart is our commitment to authentic storytelling and meticulous detail. My work is not just about capturing an event; it’s about preserving a moment in time. Each film I produce is a chance to bring a couple’s story to life, combining artistry with a personal touch. I’m proud of the emotional impact our films have on clients, and it’s incredibly rewarding to know I’ve created something they’ll cherish for a lifetime.
For anyone considering a wedding film, or simply interested in cinematic storytelling, my goal is to make you feel every emotion as if you’re living that day all over again. I know that I’m on the right pathway, when I tear up while editing your stories.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It might sound cliché, but my ultimate goal as a filmmaker is simple: to make people genuinely happy. As an artist, I believe that the most valuable thing I can offer myself and my clients is my unwavering dedication to creating something we will love and cherish. I strive to make each film, post, photograph, or project a source of joy. I love collaborating on music videos, live performances, narratives, and much more. Let’s Laugh!
I take every part of the process seriously, making sure to capture each moment with care and precision. But once I step into post-production, the editing suite becomes my creative sanctuary. Whether it’s a documentary, short, reel, or even a single photograph, I pour my whole heart into the final product. One of my professors, Helen, once called me the “Editing Wizard,” and I take a lot of pride in that compliment. It’s not just about the technical skill—it’s about adding a touch of magic and emotion that transforms raw footage into a heartfelt story.
Ultimately, my mission is to create memories that make people smile, cry, laugh, and feel deeply connected to their moments. That’s the joy that drives me every day.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Back in high school, I started a punk rock band called Uhoh! Explosion with my best buddies. What started as a garage band with local potential quickly grew into something much bigger. A few years in, we’d developed a solid fan base, toured across the country, and even gained national recognition as AP Magazine Hometown Heroes and one of MySpace’s top bands. But, despite the momentum, record labels weren’t sure how to position us, and we ultimately decided—amicably—to part ways.
When the band broke up, I felt completely adrift. For a while, I struggled to find direction, but that period of uncertainty led me back to my first passion: film. I picked up my camera and found a renewed sense of purpose, and I haven’t looked back since. Diving into filmmaking was the pivot that changed everything for me, and it’s been my true creative outlet ever since.
The best part? A few years ago, we played a reunion show, and there’s even talk of an encore in Long Beach this summer. Sometimes, when one door closes, it leads you to an entirely new path that feels like it was meant for you all along. I appreciate every memory, lesson, and friend I made along the way; so far!
