We were lucky to catch up with Brett Glover recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brett, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope my legacy (and the legacy of our shop) will be that everyone is welcome, everyone can just be! There’s always common ground to be found! Whether I agree with that person or not, I always want them to NOT feel like an outsider… and to know that our gifts are STRENGTHS that are meant to compliment each other! Each of us has something to contribute, and as someone who was constantly left out, I understand how awful it is to be in that place!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After years of “mall” retail, I wanted a change. I didn’t want those late hours (but I was broke lol and needed a job desperately) so I applied at a thrift store. It was my favorite job ever!!!
I had known since college, I’d have my own retail store… and finally, with my thrift store job, it felt like the missing piece of the puzzle had been found! So, we opened Glover’s Secondhand in 2018! We focus mainly on vintage, with some modern mixed in! Vintage is great because there’s a better value there – it lasts longer (obviously) and it’s more unique! Pretty quickly, I realized a passion for helping local makers / sellers so we began renting spaces in our shop to them! Fast forward a bit and “handmade” has become a large part of our business!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media does help, but word of mouth is really where it’s at (which a lot of that is done through socials anyway) because we care about reviews! We care what our friends, or like-minded folks, think about a place or product!
Google is another way of folks sharing their experiences! Having a 5 on there has been super helpful! We have a 5 because I ultimately care more about you feeling welcome than about you giving me money!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Consistency is key! And part of consistency is integrity! If you say you are going to be open certain hours, uou better be open those hours! People need to be able to trust you, as a small business. So, ultimately, I believe in consistence over resilience 😊
