We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brett Fitzpatrick a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brett, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Like art, happiness is subjective. I’m happy in the career path I chose, but I’m never happy with the product I make. I definitely don’t miss the day job life. I prefer to do things at my own speed and in my own way. Art is a self driven path, and I’d rather live that way.

Brett, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My current project is a theatrical band called When in May. The sound of my music nestles itself between indie rock and pop with full sounds and textures. As far as music, it’s nothing that hasn’t been done before, but I’m making something I like. If other people think it’s cool too then that’s great.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Something I’ve had to unlearn is being a perfectionist and learn to let my imperfections shape my path. And now that I’ve allowed my imperfections to come to light I get to learn that it’s like to be me.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I take influence from all sorts of media ranging from cinema, music, poetry, literature. Three of my biggest inspirations are Seamus Heaney, Charles Bukowski and Andrew McLaren. I find their work enlightening and it helps me fight my writer’s block and makes me see the problems I’m having differently.
