Alright, Brent thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
1. I had to identify my passion and expertise:
I started by identifying my passion and expertise in the specific area of talent representation; modeling, music, sports
2. Market Research:
I conduct thorough market research to understand the demand for talent representation services in each chosen niche. Identify existing talent agencies, their strengths, weaknesses, and areas where you can provide value.
3. Define My Niche:
Narrow down my focus within the talent industry. Consider specializing in a particular genre, age group, or talent type. This specialization can help you stand out in a competitive market.
4. Created My Business Plan:
I develop a comprehensive business plan that outlines my agency’s mission, vision, and objectives. Include details about my target market, pricing structure, revenue projections, and marketing strategies.
5. Legal Considerations:
I had to determine the legal structure of my talent agency, whether it’s a sole proprietorship, LLC, or corporation. Register your business and comply with all local and industry-specific regulations.
6. Talent Acquisition:
Begin the process of talent acquisition. This involved scouting talent, attending industry events, and networking with professionals in your chosen niche.
7. Build Relationships:
Cultivate relationships with industry professionals, including casting directors, producers, managers, and other talent agents. These connections can help you secure opportunities for your clients.
8. Create a Brand and Online Presence:
Develop a strong brand identity and create an online presence through a professional website and active social media profiles. Showcase my talent roster, success stories, and services.
9. Talent Development and Promotion:
Offer services to help develop the talent of my clients, such as coaching, training, or portfolio building, depending on your niche.Implement marketing and promotional strategies to increase visibility and exposure for my talent. This may include organizing auditions, portfolio showcases, or talent showcases.
10. Financial Management:
– Set up a financial management system to handle payments, contracts, and commissions. Ensure transparency in financial transactions with clients and talent.
11. Client Relationship Management:
– Establish strong client relationships. Understand their goals, preferences, and expectations to provide personalized representation services.
12. Network and Stay Informed:
– Continuously network within the industry to stay updated on trends, opportunities, and potential talent. Attend industry events, workshops, and seminars.
13. Adapt and Evolve:
– Be adaptable and willing to evolve my business based on changing industry dynamics and the needs of my talent and clients.
14. Legal Contracts:
– Develop clear and legally sound contracts that outline the terms and conditions of my representation agreements with talent. Consult with legal experts if necessary.
15. Measure Success:
– Define key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of my talent agency, such as the number of bookings, revenue growth, client satisfaction, and talent development.
Starting and running a talent agency for me is rewarding venture, but it requires dedication, industry knowledge, and strong networking skills. As the talent agency business evolves, my ability to provide excellent representation and create opportunities for my talent will be key to my success.
Brent, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Brent Law is the CEO of Dexterity Talent Company, an organization that works with seasoned and developing artists with an aim of helping them to reach the apex of their careers in the entertainment and modeling industries. His motto is “We Polish, You Shine.” At a young age, Law was a dreamer and competitor. Eventually, the former basketball and track-and-field standout would parlay his skills into successful businesses. This led him to obtain his MBA. His accomplishments are embodied by his visionary traits that allowed him to push boundaries and elevate his business model to new, nontraditional levels. He’s now known as an adept and strategic creator/developer.
His flagship company, Dexterity, was formed in 2016 and began full operation a few years later. Because its mission is to help individuals improve their talents, he subsequently assembled one of the best leadership teams to help develop savvy talent by pairing his performers with coaches who have decades of industry experience.
A former professional model who has appeared in New York and Paris, Law has more than 20 years of experience in the entertainment field and in corporate America, where he honed his leadership skills at Fortune 500 companies such as Shell, Chevron and NRG.
He led the company in recruiting a strong, diverse cadre of male and female adult and youth models. His influence resulted in the multifaceted enterprise gaining greater acclaim as it broadened its footprint internationally. The talent he assembled impressed industry experts throughout the world as he helped his team embark on the British Virgin Islands in July 2022 for an epic international show that catapulted Dexterity to a higher level in the fashion world.
Law followed that experience by leading his team to showstopping appearances in New York that set the runway ablaze and left the event abuzz about Dexterity. The CEO has now welcomed invitations from clientele such as Bottega Veneta, DASOUL UNDERWEAR, Dillard’s, Dolce & Gabbana, Ebony, Essence, Fruit of the Loom, Houston Galleria, KRAVE Magazine, L’EFFRONTE JOURNAL, Lululemon Athletica, MALVIE magazine, The Perfect Man magazine, and many others.
Beyond modeling, Law also develops resources for dancing, music and acting – including voice-over talent. Among singers, he has worked with aspiring hip-hop and R&B talent by negotiating concert appearances and arranging promotional and public service announcements.
Civically, he led his company on projects with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, local schools, area universities and has volunteered to support youth and their families.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Dexterity’s core supporters consisted of three individuals: myself, my brother and my dad. Without corporate sponsors or other outside supporters, the three of us dipped into our individual savings to recruit new and established singers. Later, we cobbled up even more personal funds to elevate the modeling component of the company. Every dime had to be spent frugally, with little to no room for error. While we had to pull back on or mothball a few things, we continued to underwrite our own projects with limited funds. This meant we were forced to strategically sign star-quality talent to generate bookings and try to produce revenue. Thus, our humble beginnings resulted mainly from self-funding.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
To attract interest from potential clients, Dexterity was compelled to build a team of professionals with irrefutable and impeccable credentials in their areas of expertise. We developed a website to introduce the company, showcase our experienced team and spotlight our mission. We paired our talent with seasoned coaches and other professional personnel with decades of industry experience, collectively.
