We recently connected with Brent Everett and have shared our conversation below.
Brent, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Throughout my life I’ve been a moderate risk taker. None bigger than recently quitting my job/career as an environmental consultant and re-opening my custom urn business, Infinite Urns. Working as an environmental consultant can be rewarding and was for more than a decade. However, at the end of the day the work was simply not rewarding enough for me to keep donating my passion toward it full time. My tank was no longer being refilled. I needed to give my life a jolt to open my heart and release this creative being from the doldrums.
I took the risk because life is a gift, and we should live it with visions of greatness. Greatness can come in many forms and may be completely different for each person. For me, it is dreaming big and cultivating or manifesting what I want to do while navigating this Earth inside this human body. Re-opening Infinite Urns has been great because it has afforded me more time to spend with my kids and doing the things that I love. For that, I am grateful and so far, it has turned out amazing. I am on the back half of my life and my appreciation, love, and gratitude are abundant and at an all-time high!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born in Fort Collins, Colorado and grew up loving sports, nature, and music. In 1993 I moved to Durango, Colorado, which turned out to be the first step in the evolution of Infinite Urns. In 1996, I visited the MARBLE/marble Stone Carving Symposium in Marble, Colorado, where the famous Colorado Yule Marble has been quarried since 1905. The Colorado Yule Marble has been utilized for famous landmarks such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington, Virginia, and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C.
In 1997, I began working at MARBLE/marble and over a 12-year period I learned the craft of carving stone from the professional instructors at the symposium as well as the attendees that came from many places around the world. Within that experience, not only did I learn how to carve stone but also how to relate to people from many different cultures. One word sums up the MARBLE/marble experience, MAGIC!
As one can imagine, it takes time to shape a hard stone; and while carving, the mind tends to wander. Naturally, I couldn’t help but wonder how these stones formed? What processes took place for this beautiful white Colorado Yule Marble to come into existence? As such, I set out to get a degree in Geology from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Arizona. At NAU I found that metamorphic petrology and structural geology were my passions. My senior project was on the metamorphic properties of the Colorado Yule Marble. Not only did I learn a vast amount about the Yule Marble, but I also learned geologic processes that lead to the formation of many rock types around the world. I incorporate that knowledge into my urns, because like the people and pets that are encapsulated in the urns, the stone itself has a story to tell. That is part of the full circle of each urn, the stone’s story along with the deceased loved one’s story. The blending of the stories can be a powerful tale, and the alchemy of the two, I believe brings us closer to God, Divinity, and the Mystics.
Losing a loved one can be devastating, challenging, and at times confusing. One way to cope with the loss of a loved one and begin the healing process is to honor and preserve our memories of them, which can come in the form of music, a favorite meal, places that they loved, a smell, an image, or a feeling that touches our being as we are eternally connected. The connection to our loved ones and their eternal spirit can sometimes be lost, or memories may fade over time. Infinite Urns was born to honor our loved one’s spirit and to keep our connections and memories alive through art and stone. Infinite Urns are one-of-a-kind custom-made urns, and you will not find a replica anywhere else. Your loved one is one-of-a-kind and should be honored as such.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes! The mission of my journey is to help people heal with a fine art urn. These are not your typical urns. An Infinite Urn is designed tap into the eternal, the love, and this magical reality that we as humans are gifted to be a part and to embody the essence of the loved one within it. An Infinite Urn stone sculpture generally comes with a candle and lighting and is an interactive way of honoring a lost loved one each and every day.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Making it as an artist is hard. The creative arts are an extension of the universe that we are connected to. However, it is tough to make money being a visionary in a world where most people are drifting through and unaware of the magnificence in front of our very eyes. Most of this world we live in is an illusion with all the technology, greed, power and hate and people are completely asleep and disconnected from their true nature. As such, I am constantly pivoting my intensions in an attempt to reach the people that are awake, want what I provide, and will pay for what it is worth.
While I am passionate about providing a vessel for our loved one’s ashes, I have also been relatively successful generating non-urn stone sculptures for private collectors, like the C-1 and C-2 vertebrae that I made for a chiropractor (see the orange lit up bones on the photo page). Branching out and creating a stone sculpture whether its an urn or a garden piece has been an impactful pivot on my journey.
And to help make ends meet I have recently opened up an environmental consulting business, Infinite Hydro. Infinite Hydro offers environmental consulting for various remediation efforts associated with petroleum hydrocarbon release sites, Phase I/II environmental site assessments, and hydrogeologic characterization projects.
Between the two businesses, I keep very busy and the end results are truly rewarding. Helping people heal from the loss of a loved one and cleaning up the Earth from everyday contaminants are both worthy activities to be donating my passion toward.
