Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brent Atwood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Brent, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
Absolutely wish I had started way earlier in my music career. Although I did play in several bands in and after high school it was never a priority. I wish I had made it one. I have always loved music and playing/singing. I grew up playing piano and drums but as is the story with a lot of folks, “Life” got in the way. It wasn’t until I worked a part time job at a local music venue that I got the fever again. I watched as band after band played each night and thought to myself, “I used to do this, I can do it again!” So with that I started the task of finding suitable players for a Country/Southern Rock band. It started off rough as most do, but in the end I couldn’t be with a better bunch of guys with the Southern Country Outlaws. Could I, and should I have done it years before? For sure!!!

Brent, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, Hello…. my name is Brent Atwood and I own and front an award winning Country Rock/Southern Rock band called the Southern Country Outlaws. I started the band in 2017 after a very long stint of not playing music at all. That was due to, well… life. I got married at 20, started to work as a Fire Fighter at 21 and stayed in public service Fire/Police/EMS for 31 years at this point and counting. My love for and longing to play again hit me while working a part time job at a music venue in North Myrtle Beach. I decided I could do what I saw the other bands doing, just as well, if not better. So I put it to the test and started the Southern Country Outlaws Band. As with most it was a rough start, but through the years we have grown into one of the most listened to bands in the Carolinas and beyond. We have earned the Carolina Country Music Awards title of Humanitarian of the year 2021, This was for my work on my own music festival called Vet Fest Carolina’s. In 2020 it was a small 1 day festival with 6 local bands to raise funds and awareness on Veteran needs across the state. In 2021 it had grown to a 3 day festival with over 40 artist playing right here in Myrtle Beach, SC. We hope to continue this festival in years to come. The band also won the Carolina Country Music Award for Vocal group of the year 2022 and was a runner up for Entertainer of the year for 2022 as well. We were nominated for the Josie Music Awards Song of the year for 2022 and have have been nominated for the 2023 Josie Music Awards in four categories. Group of the year, Song of the year, Vocalist of the year and Rising star of the year. We have worked very hard…. but we know we couldn’t do anything without the love and support of our family, friends and fans!!! Big Love for all y’all!!!!!

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes…. to create and share as much music with the world as I can. I have always loved music of ALL kinds. I listen to it all and just want to bring it to everyone I can. I feel that music truly is a powerful thing and can change a person from the inside out. I have witnessed it change people’s lives and want to be a part of that.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
What’s most rewarding to me is watching the faces of those at our shows light up. Not for every song for every person, but when we play that one song for that one person and you can see the joy it brings them, or you can almost feel the memory they are having at that moment…. man that makes all the blood, sweat and tears worth it right then, right there. All the awards and showcases and such are great, but seriously pale to the feeling of making someone’s day with a song.
