We recently connected with Breno Burnett and have shared our conversation below.
Breno, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I feel that anyone who decides to live creatively is always taking a risk. To bet your income and career so you can live of doing what you love is a big risk! A risk I took a couple of years ago and still taking to this day. A risk which in my opinion is worth having because the reward is always fulfilling. SinceI was a kid I had a passion for cameras and what you could create with it. It was a method of communication, to express and show others how you see the world. But I thought that to have a life, making money, doing that was not possible. So I decided to take another path and pursue the career of being a doctor, because that’s what “successful people” do. It’s what I thought… and it didn’t last long! Shortly after I decided to change courses and eventually quit college. It wasn’t making sense for what I wanted in my life and it looked liked it would only take longer to achieve my goals. Leaving all this behind was a big risk and now it was in my hands, a big responsibility. But at the same time I was transitioning from a photographer to a filmmaker and learning how to tell stories, at the same time I was noticing a shift in the business and how we could use the power of video to tell moving stories, educate and sell products and services. After a long time of researching on my own, educating myself, through videos even, and being available for hands on experience, I them took another risk… of starting my own production company and so far I’m only living what I live now because of those risks and I have no regrets and can’t wait to embrace more risks in the future!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Breno Burnett, Owner of Kite Film Productions, a video production house based in Orlando, Florida. Currently 24 years old, I was born in Brazil and moved to the United States of America when I was 14 years old, so even thoughI was able to carry some of the Brazilian culture with me, I’ve also spent a lot of my forming years in America, where I got to learn a lot as well, through failures and mistakes, I was able to learn faster and gain experience. Since when I was a kid, I was always around cameras, my father was a professional photographer in Brazil, so I got the chance to be around some shoots and have fun with cameras… It wasn’t until after a couple of years of moving to America that I decided to try the photographer path for myself after taking a photography class in my High School. At the time is was still very young and wasn’t so serious about having a business, so I did only for the sake of creativity and fun.
After deciding not to follow photography as a job and initiate a pursue for a degree I quickly realized that wasn’t for me… That’s when I started learning video and fell in love with it. Took the risk of dropping out of college and learning the video of business on my own.
Why Video? Because I found some limitations in photography, even though I believe they are both important and serves different purposes… In video I found a way to express and convey ideas in a much complex and deeper sense, to elaborate in a story and have a more accurate perspective than with photos. The business part came when I realized that I could use this tool and the knowledge not only for myself but now I could help other people, where if their business is struggling to connect with an audience, or can’t clearly tell a message about who they are and their vision… that’s where I come to help.
And honestly, that’s what I believe differentiates my business from most. I truly believe that I’m here to help others, as a business owner, I know the struggles and how hard it can be, that’s why when I create something I pour my heart into it, I’m here to help other business owners, help the people that are part the crew and create these videos with me and I just don’t work for free because I’m here to help and support my family as well hahaha!
Mainly all this I do for the glory of God who trusted this gift to me so I could make good use of it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative is to do what I love and secondly to inspire and empower other creators to do so.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Online Courses and Podcasts really helped a lot, especially “MidConvo” by Edward Lee and Paul Weaver… as well as, “Grow Your Video Business” by Ryan Koral. I can’t express how much they helped me with all the knowledge and experience they shared.
