We recently connected with Brennen Tse and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brennen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I think I’m lucky to have found this passion while I’m young, as not many people discover photography until their older, nor have the resources to get camera equipment. I owe a ton of thanks to my parents for supporting me throughout my photography journey! I’ve found meaning and dedicated myself to this craft, and although I may get a bit obsessed at times I manage to keep it in check. Photographing moon alignments is just too cool! I think this creative career came at the perfect time, because when I was growing up, I never really had a hobby that stuck (though legos and video games were pretty cool). Finding a hobby just before the pandemic hit allowed me to find meaning and provided me with something to do even when stuck inside. After I honed my skills around my neighborhood, I now had a hobby where I could go out into the world and create amazing work, and meet amazing people, collaborate, and form lifelong friendships, which is just truly unique! I think if i’d started any younger I would have had to get my parents to drive me around everywhere, and even maybe carry my lens. There were some pretty cool events I missed before i started photography like lunar or solar eclipses, but I’ve got my entire future ahead to explore!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brennen Tse and I’m a landscape/cityscape photographer based in Atlanta GA. I’m most known for my moon and sun alignments with the skyscrapers and famous buildings. You can find me downtown with my trusty drone bag slung over one shoulder and my camera strap over the other. I used to live in Seattle where I really perfected my craft of drone photography and moon alignments, and now I try to chase the moon and catch some amazing photographs! I also love low fog in the city, and drones help a ton with capturing that beauty! I’m addicted to moon chasing and hope to capture the beautiful moon in every place I visit!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was falling into stagnation and complacency. Back when I lived in Seattle I was shooting all the same locations because it was easy and simple. They got likes and praise, but didn’t provide me with any creative satisfaction. It was only after a chat with another photographer (Tim Durkan) that I realized I needed to change. I think it takes intent and planning to truly be considered a photographer. You can take pictures with anything, and you don’t really have to think about composition, rule of thirds, or other things, but that’s just a snapshot. A photograph has a theme, meaning and weight. You need creativity to see things other may overlook, and turn that into a beautiful image. I really started looking for unique spots, or even forgotten compositions at popular places. I found quite a few and I’m proud I did so! Drones also offered an entirely new perspective and avenue of creativity. Go outside your comfort zone, or else you may never improve as a photographer.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is being able to share the amazing things I witness with my followers. When I show friends my photos, especially my moon alignments, they’re amazed, and wonder if such a photo is really possible! Hopefully my photos, whether they be sunrise, sunset, moons, cities, or landscapes can inspire people to go outside and marvel at the beauty of nature. Hopefully they even look at the moon more often!
