We were lucky to catch up with Brenden Trojan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brenden, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents taught me a lot of lessons. If we had the time to go through them all I would, but unfortunately we’d be here forever! The main point I want to have you take away is kindness. When we are growing our business and moving up in our career, it is cut throat. To grow more, we have to claw our way to the top. (as the world tells us). But my parents taught me that you can grow and move up with showing kindness. Even if you don’t get the job or if you lose out on an opportunity. You should still support the person who did get it and thank the people for even the chance to apply. If you put a positive mindset on all of your outcomes, you will grow much faster than living with disappointment that you failed.
Jump forward to my career now. That mindset has shaped how I work with clients. If someone reaches out to me and they end up not booking me, I always respond back saying, “Thanks for letting me know, I hope you have a great event!” Or “I hope I can work with you in the future!” I do this for a few reasons. The first being I want to make sure they know I received their reply to my email, but the second is also knowing that this isn’t the end of our conversation. Some people really wanted to work with me, but didn’t have the budget this year. Some don’t think I was what they were looking for this year as I didn’t reach their caliber. Whatever it is, responding back with a positive email wishing them well keeps the relationship alive.
I have clients who have said, “No” and ended up coming back months and years later wanting to book. All because I ended the conversation with kindness. Not mad they chose someone else or couldn’t afford me, but understanding that this time around might not be what God intended. So end any opportunity with being your friendly self as you never know where it may lead. I have even gotten referrals from clients who said no because of the way I ended that conversation! So always be on your best behavior as my mom would say, but also just be kind. Just like you might prefer one restaurant today as you might do tomorrow, so do they. And that’s okay! Next time they might choose you, but only if you were kind all the way through the first time around.

Brenden, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a magician and mentalist. So you can think of sleight of hand tricks with cards, coins, Rubik’s cubes, and even levitating someone on stage! As well as being able to read your mind! I became interested in magic when my grandpa showed me my first trick, but I really dove into magic during high school.
Since I was homeschooled up until high school, my way of making friends was, “Do you want to see a magic trick?” From there I started performing publicly and was asked to perform at schools, private parties, camps, corporate events and so many more. I couldn’t believe what I was doing in high school and college, and that I was starting to performing for corporations across the Midwest, but now I can’t believe this is what I do full time.
I have had the pleasure of performing in Eight States including Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. And in just a few months I will add Missouri, Iowa, and Las, Vegas Nevada to the list! Which I am SO EXCITED for! It truly is a blessing to be able to do what I love and share it with so many people across the U.S.
So yes I perform magic, but in reality I specialize in helping clients take their entertainment to the next level. That means creating wonder, excitement, and connection between guests that will leave them talking long after the event is over. Whether it is close up magic, a stage show, or learning magic. People hire me for one reason and that is to make their event unforgettable.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Word of mouth is one of the fastest ways I am growing my business. It initially was through lead platforms for entertainers and google ads, but now that I am performing more and more after my shows people will get my information and contact me. It also happens after the event that a client will send my information to their colleagues saying, “We saw him at this conference, we need him for our event!” I have had some clients see me at more than 3 events! Not because they booked me for each one, but because they were attending the conference and mentioned, “Hey if you need entertainment, I know someone!” So doing an amazing job is the best way to boost business.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The main reason, aside from a fantastic performance, was the talking period before the event and after with the client. I love to always stay in touch with the client before a show and try to stay in touch with them after so we can work together again. (as I have different shows I perform and naturally have repeat business). I have heard pain points from other clients that communication was bad with their last entertainer or they just left when they were done, so I always make it my mission to be better. I make sure the client stays informed leading up to the date of the event. They know when I will be there and that everything is taken care of from the audio, stage, payment, etc. And if something changes or they are missing something, we don’t find out the day of, because I have been talking with them for a long time. So it eases stress a ton for both of us! Also, after my performance I NEVER just leave. I always try to stay a bit longer to not only thank the Client, but the people who watched the show as well. Thank them for coming, helping in the show, etc. A lot of times, they will want to talk to me after and the fact I stay longer to chat with them about how I got into magic or just even show ideas means the world to them! So always go the extra mile as it truly makes a difference.
