Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brenden Rapp (brapp). We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brenden, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I realized I wanted to pursue EDM, and more specifically dubstep production, was on the drive home from my 2nd music festival, Lost Lands 2019. I went with my best friend Lane and we got into the music together. We started to go to shows together that same year and he had the idea that we should go to Lost Lands, so we decided to full send it there and I truly could not believe the amount of pure love I felt for not only the music, but the people. Everyone I connected with that year at shows truly changed my viewpoint on life and what I truly wanted to do with mine. On the way home I remember looking over to my buddy and told him how sad I am it’s over and that I truly had the best weekend of my life and I felt so inspired and motivated. I started googling production softwares before I even pulled into my driveway back home
Brenden, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brenden Rapp also known as BRAPP. I got into this industry in 2020 shortly after being inspired during my first raves & festivals in 2019. The music I enjoy producing is inspired by early Excision, Virtual Riot & Kompany which I characterize as heavy, crisp, and clean sound design. What I think sets me apart from others is that I strive for unique sounds that people can discover a love for. I am careful & detailed with how I decide to combine sounds and sets. I am most proud of playing shows with people who have been an inspiration such as Codd Dubz, BLVNKFACE, and many more @ Dancefestopia 2024. The main thing I want fans to know is that I am passionate about making music & inspiring others through my music. I could make $1 per show but as long as I have added a meaningful experience, memory, or inspired someone to follow their dreams too, I have succeeded.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Something I think non-creatives may not notice about being a creative is how much time, energy, & sacrifice that goes into producing. It is easy to look upon a DJ & see the fun while playing a set but there is so much that goes into the moment before going on stage to share your music. Especially as an upcoming producer, this business is not self-sufficient when it comes to finances. Because, of this I work full-time as a landscaper to make a decent living & afford needs for producing. Many times I have had to sacrifice time with the people I love to work on my sets & music but I have always felt that I will return 2x the meaningful memories, experiences, and time with them. No matter what, as I succeed, my friends and family will be succeeding with me.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I had an incredible opportunity to play a show at an out-of-state venue. I decided to take this opportunity although I would be paying for my own expenses & independently coordinating a place to stay. I flew out there with my girlfriend & one of my buddies met us there for support. I became humbled by the experience when set times changed last minute & I was then playing the last set of the night @ 4’oclock. There was no one except for my buddy & my girlfriend who stood in front of me as I played my set. No matter what, I played my heart out until the owner came out & told me he had to cut my set short. Although I was grateful for this opportunity, I did feel defeated as I had made many sacrifices to be there and felt I had made little to no impact. Looking back I know the meaning of that experience was to remind me to keep pushing towards my goals and to be grateful for everything I get and the people I can impact, no matter how big or small. Nonetheless at the end of the day, all I need are my true friends (and family).
