We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brendan Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brendan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Starting my short term rental career required a lot of learning. I was not sure how it would happen. I did a ton of research and my conclusion was that I could spend years researching…the difference between my life then and my life now was purely “execution”.
I began to simply take action-when I couldn’t see far ahead, I went ahead as far as I could see. I asked questions, tried to solve problems as they arose and kept trying to move forward.
Honestly, figuring out how to launch a short term rental venture took a lot of lessons learned by failure, humility to learn from others more experienced and the confidence and courage to take a risk on myself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Short Term Rental Entrepreneur. I helped cofound strIQ.com, an STR focused mobile app, and have been steadily building my own property portfolio and cohosting portfolio. I kind of exclusively focus on serving missionaries with our cohosting, due to my background in full time Christian ministry, I just saw a niche way to serve others.
I want people to know that the STRs are a strong pathway to freedom, independence and the ability to serve others with generosity.
Conversations about M&A are often focused on multibillion dollar transactions – but M&A can be an important part of a small or medium business owner’s journey. We’d love to hear about your experience with selling businesses.
I sold a service based business years ago. Honestly, I realized at the time I wasn’t really prepared to scale it. It’s better for my clients and my employees to let go of things that I can’t manage, although it was tough on my ego.
Since then, I have started a similar service business with a renewed spirit, with MUCH more experience.
The best advice I can give is do what you love, and do GREAT work. The value of a business will be directly correlated to how much GREAT work you did and how much attention and care you put in from the beginning.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Because we focus on really quality customer relationships with all my business ventures, we don’t really need social media all that much, most of our new clients come from referrals and strong relationships.
If you focus on creating a few raving fans, it will produce more clients. Just do good work and partner with good people.
