Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brenda Y Tillman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brenda Y, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Writing is something that I have always done. I have been writing since I was a little girl. I didn’t invest into learning the techniques and different styles to write in until I was an adult, when I finally took creative writing classes. The process could have gone a lot quicker if I had gone to college after high school. The skill that I think was most essential for my type of writing was to understand that my voice is my voice. Trying to write the way people thought I should write was an obstacle for me.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I find peace in my writing. I have been writing for years. I have authored one book. “Sanctified Freak, the Spirit and the Flesh Are Contrary.” I think that my writing style is unique as it comes from a fiction setting, but touches so many truths. I am also a minister that deals with the flesh topic. We as Christians feel like once we give our lives to Christ, no more flesh battles. Well I believe my ministry is helping believers to know that those battles are still very relevant and need to be acknowledged, but also allowing them to understand that it doesn’t mean they aren’t true believers. I want to help them to understand that there is work to be done. We all have got to be deliberate about being discipline to get our desired deliverance.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to help people understand that you can love the Lord and still mess up. You need to learn from your lessons and grow from them.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a writer is it’s my voice. No matter what I’m going through, I write as BYSmith and no one can take that from me.
