We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brenda Solis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brenda below.
Brenda , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My name is Brenda Solis, I’m an artist living and exploring the Dallas-Fort Worth area originally from Mexico. I have always been a creative person, and I always knew I wanted to be an artist. I fell in love with painting at a very young age, and quickly built a passion for art and the fine arts in general. I also have a passion for photography which comes from my dad, he was a photographer in Mexico and gave me my first camera when I was a teen, and it became one of my favorite hobbies. I’m a wife and mother of three, and I also use photography to capture our lives and special moments. I started my Instagram journey in 2013. And quickly became an outlet for self-expression through photos and video. I started posting about our family lives from outings, events, and special moments and slowly built an audience. At first, it was a way to keep being creative, and I love creating reels. Having the opportunity to be an influencer did not come fast or easy. I’m still learning and growing through the different ways to use social media as an art medium.
I have been a painter for many years, and love creating art. I attended Mountain View College for Fine Arts and had my first solo art show, as well as several musicals. I have also taught adult painting classes at the Dallas Public Library. My creative art journey has been a long one, I also love acting, singing, and dancing, I was part of Cara Mía Theatre Co. and performed at the Latino Cultural Center. I was a fitness dance instructor for a couple of years as well.
My husband and I both share the same passions, such as photography. He has been so supportive throughout my art journey. He helps me behind and in front of the camera. Which has made creating social media content possible. We enjoy creating content together and capturing our family lives. We have a great teamwork going, along with our kids, it has brought us closer as a family and also a great way to capture memories.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Mexican-American artist who loves watercolor painting, visual arts, and photography.
When I was a teen I fell in love with acting, singing, and dancing. I loved doing plays, being part of dance companies, and performing. In college, I had to wonderful opportunity to perform at the Latino Cultural. And was performing as much as I could.
In my early twenties started to focus more on my art and finding my style. And exploring different mediums, paints, shapes and how color can relate to each other. I wanted to paint strong women, with emotion in their eyes, women’s strength, beauty and struggle. My mother is the biggest inspiration for her strength and perseverance throughout my life. She has been so supportive, giving and always there for me and all my practices and shows growing up. She had a career in sewing, which also inspired me to learn how to sew and fell in love with fashion design at a very young age. Growing up my mother and I would design dresses, pick out the fabric, and sew them together. This translated into my artwork as well, I love to use quilting patterns on my paintings and add different textiles to my work.
I preferred to paint with watercolor, and acrylic on wood. Using the Wood as part of my canvas to create fantasy worlds to tell a story. I find inspiration in nature, life, culture, and botanicals, which heavily inspired my style. My main subject matter is the female portrait, florals, and symbolism.
My artwork was what started my Instagram journey, at the beginning I was sharing my artwork. After some time, It started to share our family life, and events around our area. I fell in love with the creative process of creating digital content. And my art changed into video and photography. And along with my husband started exploring Texas to document and share new places, adventures, art museums and nature. We soon started taking weekend trips or road trips to nearby towns and sharing our travel adventures on Instagram. I was able to combine my love for art with the digital content to create unique reels. Combining my passion for art, acting, photography and visual arts is what sets me apart on social media. We have also ventured out to Oklahoma, Santa Fe, and Mexico for fun travel adventures.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being an artist and digital content creator has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my life. It has been such an outlet for self-expression and a way to connect with so many people. Personally, my children are surrounded by art, from going with me to art shows and creating art at home. Growing up in Mexico I remember painting on walls at seven years old with picked purple flower petals. As a child, I enjoyed long walks through fields and would pick flowers to draw. I was so inspired by the beautiful scenery of my hometown, with numerous monarch butterflies passing through their journey yearly. I can teach my children about art and encourage them to be creative and support them in their art journey. Seeing my children be excited to create art, it is so wonderful, as well as letting them feel encourage to create art.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For those just starting out, my advice is to just start, and trust yourself. Don’t feel discouraged or afraid to start your digital content or art journey. You will find your niche and style as you go. Embrace who you are and that your story is worth telling and sharing. I would set a realistic social media post schedule. And don’t feel pressure to post every day. The best thing is to post quality content that keeps your viewers engaged. Be creative and try to experiment with different visuals. Being interactive with your audience will build a great community. Keeping a routine is so important, I choose certain days of the week to create content, and having days off for self-care and rest will help to keep your creative juices flowing and is essential to not getting burnt out. I started my Instagram journey in 2013. And quickly became an outlet for self-expression through photos and video. I started sharing my artwork and family life and slowly built an audience. It has been a learning process, I’m still learning and growing through the different ways to use social media as an art medium.
