We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brenda Jennings a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, thanks for joining us today. How has Covid changed your business model?
During covid was a sure wake up call to be considered non-essential to the world when you felt as though you were needed caused me to reevaluate how I did and what services I’d have to offer in order to survive what was to happen next. First of all, I was completely shut down and without income or a way to service my clients nor get them products because I had totally based my business on what I could do at the salon, and we couldn’t be outside. I had clients asking for products for their hair and with most of the clients were now considering going natural because they needed a retouch, and I was not able to do that. That’s when I
went to a tablet that i had written a formula for what i had taught a class on and begin to pray for an answer too how to develop this and get it into the hands of my clients ASAP. And that’s where my products line Scalp Cocktail came to life. During that time, I was mixing, and testing. and trying to see how to make this dream happen. I actually started letting my clients try the products and it totally blew up, and Revive Scalp Cocktail became a brand name.

Brenda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a 35 Year Stylist in this industry, I’m located inside of Big Mikes Salon in Duncanville, Texas. I service all hair textures, from relaxers, Curls, braids and All Natural styles offering the Custom Revive Scalp Cocktail detox and stimulating services for all hair types. Scalp Cocktails, come as a detox spray, scalp oil, stimulating Drops, detangler, which comes with a suggested steamer treatment. I have been extremely blessed to offer this product to my clients, co workers, and so many others. The products are available. for pick up and shipping.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
What keeps me strong in this Industry is that I love what I do, and I have built relationships and family built on my level of customer service, attention for detail and definitely the fact that i work by appointment only and always have. I believe that understanding each client’s specific need. And allowing each one feel and experience personal one on one care every time, attention to detail and specific needs and desires. Having full consultation with each client has allowed me to focus on each client as an individual and not a number. Even through the pandemic I was able to give. Same customer service and by the grace of God I didn’t lose any clients but gained so much insight as to continue learning how to show others how to keep and maintain clients and marketing your talents by word of mouth. Through everything I use social media to show my business and work but not much seeking new clients, my clients have helped build my business. It’s all about the standards and professionalism that you set for your business.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson the taught me a huge lesson was that I thought I was going to leave beauty school and make a lot of money, but the truth was that until you learn the business, set a plan, get a savings, continue to learn, and be that forever learner, be professional, take some losses. you will lose. I was in a large salon high customer traffic and the money was flowing in. and I was spending like crazy every person selling something I was buying. I had the stuff and not what I needed. It wasn’t until it was time to do my taxes that I realized that I was making the money, but I didn’t have anything to show for it. when my bookkeeper made me realize that I wasn’t a business owner, but I was just working to be working and nothing to fall back on. It was in 1995 that I took the first step to run a business and take the steps to set myself up to win. You can have all the money in your hands but until you put it all back to work for you and you can see the profit of your labor, you feel like a slave. I’m a business owner and I set the pace and atmosphere for what I want to see and expect from my hard work, and I go in everyday with a mindset of changing lives of every client that I encounter and at the same time save for my future and advance my business goals from behind the chair to teaching and instructing, and as I have grown I thrive on sharing so that the Spa Trendz Glam Studio/Scalp Cocktail Brand will be an inspiration to other and they may Soar.
