We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brenda Harper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
A defining moment which changed the trajectory of my life was the completion of my first author credit, ‘God Ordains Marriages, which is a spiritual marital book based on our marriage along with applicable spiritual values. As I look back in retrospect, one of my driving factors, was an English professor in my first year of college, who’s negative words and teachings drove me to achieve success in my career. This experience inspired me to become an advocate for others in their career endeavors. Becoming an author was never in my wildest dreams, not to mention utilizing the uniformity and style of my marriage as a driving force for each chapter. This new adventure led my Husband and myself on a path of uncertainty and with a blank canvas in view, and our new quest was wonderful and enlightening. This adventure helped us to acquire the experience for our book, ‘God Ordains marriages’, which has been in the making for over twenty-five years. Each year of our marriage contributed to the wonderful pages throughout the book.

Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Along with training and knowledge, I believe a desire is one of the most helpful skills in succeeding in your field. Desires build and drives the knowledge and passion for advancement in your field. Desires keep you motivated and driven towards success. Also, support is another helpful skill in succeeding in your career field. A valid support system is imperative in helping a driven individual to grow and succeed in their given career field. Finally, financial backing and security is the most important skill in achieving success in a given career field due to the need for the movement and advancement of your dream/desires.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back and change my path, I would change my profession/specialty. As I reflected on my career path, it was always my dream/passion to become a Medical Doctor. While on my journey to becoming a doctor, unforeseen life challenges shifted my original path. However, through my resiliency I was able to push forward and begin a new and fulfilling career path through Marital and Spiritual Counseling, which has become a true passion of mine. It has always been my desire to share the wisdom that I have been granted through my life experiences with those that I come into connection with.
