We recently connected with Brenda Carrillo and have shared our conversation below.
Brenda , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I first created Hauz Of Smalls in 2016, I saved to my money from my multiple jobs to be able to have enough to invest into my stores inventory, which was about $5000. I started doing pop-ups at first Friday events, drag shows and Pride. After about 3 years of saving I was then able to purchase the brick and mortar building which I am currently located
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Brenda. I was born in Mexico. Im bilingual and I loved fashion as a child I would. Go thru my mom clothes and try to make outfits. When I was in high school I took their home economics class which offered. Sewing class and I was hooked. I was making pj’s and tote bags for everyone I knew. After high school I attended GCC for a semester and took fashion courses in pattern making . I was working multiple jobs at the time. I always wanted to create my own brand .when I open. Hauz Of Smalls i wanted the core beliefs of my store to be. Fashion in ageless genderless And with a sense of unity. For anyone who doesn’t fit the high fashion. World or mainstream I wanted to provide a safe space for ANYONE to shop regardless of age, Sex or gender identity or any beliefs. I offer private Shopping For those who want extra privacy as well as online we Carry a wide selection of unique handbags and n custom Fashion
As a drag Queen my self and a festival lover I feel my unique sense of fashion gives me an edge when curating items for my store I plan on continuing my fashion journey into my 100’s. So expect the unexpected from me .
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Wow social media that’s a tricky one it really does take someone to have a commitment to posting and staying relevant to what’s going on and not just in. Your industry trends. Tick toks all play a huge role. Hashtags are still a thing. But mostly they want to feel like they know you thru your social media’s. And remember everything you post stats on the internet for ever! So post mindfully .
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
So like I said I started by brand and store in 2016 and I was going along steadily growing and learning then 2020 hit and BOOM. We started to restrict number of customer and companies we worked with vendors started delaying production and product till we were at a stop. I’m 2021 I closed the store for 6 months. And was doing on line only. Sales were extremely slow. Then I’m 2022 I reopen with one on one appointments. It was slow process as I basically had to restart. From the beginning . I have some very loyal clients that have been there from the beginning and have always supported me. To them I thank them and always appreciate what they do for me .
