Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brenda Briscoe, LMT. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brenda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I was actually practicing herbology and nutrition, something like what a health coach does today but not as educated as that. I was all about helping people feel better and heal.
My 19 y.o. stepdaughter Azur came to me asking if I could find an alternative treatment for her scoliosis, as the next step that her doctor offered to her after spending years in a back brace, was surgery to insert Harrington rods along her spine. This frightened not only her, but also her dad and me. I began searching for answers.
Another practitioner asked me if I had considered Bowen Therapy. I had never heard of this but began researching it to learn that it had been very successful at improving the condition of scoliosis. The one and only Bowen practitioner in the DFW Metroplex at the time let me know that a class was coming in two months that I could take so that I could work on Azur.
I did this and it has changed my life. Once I finished this 5-day intensive course, I began using it on Azur and also on some of her friends and mine. People were getting amazing results! Azur quickly began feeling less and less pain, as well as realizing that she was standing straighter and taller. This was my defining moment — seeing my precious daughter have a happier, pain-free life after so many years of struggling. My passion for this therapy grew into a career that was never intended. I am grateful now that I get to rise every morning and help people get back their normal lives without pain.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always knew that what I wanted to do in life was to help people. I just never knew what that was going to look like until I reached my early 40’s. As I mentioned in my previous answer, I simply began using Bowen Therapy to help my daughter Azur and thought that would be it. But God had another plan, as He had placed a desire to help people in my heart as a young girl. Working with Azur launched me into this pain-relieving mission and it has been an exciting journey.
Once I decided that I would like to help others outside of my family, I went to massage school so that I could get a license to use my hands on people. In the beginning, it was difficult to offer just Bowen Therapy because it seemed that, like me, others had never heard of it. I found myself explaining this amazing therapy over and over to try to convert my massage clients who were in pain. And once they tried it, each one understood the value and continued with Bowen Therapy instead of massage.
Now after 21 years, I have begun to focus on helping women eliminate their migraine headaches permanently. Other conditions people seek out Bowen Therapy for are fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome and neuropathy. The most common issues I work with on a daily basis are neck and back pain, as well as joint pain.
Bowen Therapy is known for its quick, profound, and long-lasting resolution to deep core problems. It works on vibrational frequencies stimulated manually. These vibrations open up energy flows and remind the body how to heal. Uniquely, the vibrations last for 5 to 10 days, so you don’t want to schedule another session before 5 days and possibly up to 10. Many clients only need one to three sessions for their health concern to turn around permanently.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would absolutely choose my same profession! The only thing I wish I could have done differently is discovered it sooner. However, Bowen Technique had not entered this country until about 5 years earlier than I found it. And, frankly, working with people in the herbal health coaching profession prior to that did give me some foreknowledge about the body and how it holds and releases pain. So that was good experience and preparation for me in this bodywork industry.
Knowing that I can help people get rid of their chronic pain gets me up in the morning willing to face another day of a joy-filled career.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I work at a functional medicine clinic. Once we shut down for COVID-19, I had no income. Through prayer, my memory was jogged regarding a time about 20 years ago when a fellow Bowen practitioner who lived in Austin could not travel to see me but asked if I could do a remote session on her. I actually was in disbelief, but I humored her and agreed to a predetermined time that we would both set aside for this purpose. She simply relaxed during that hour and I put a body pillow on my massage table to help me imagine working on her. After the hour was up and I felt like the session was done, I called her to find out, much to my surprise, that her pain level had greatly diminished. A few days later, she let me know that it had totally gone away.
During the months we were closed, I let my clients know that I was going to be doing these remote sessions because Bowen Therapy definitely has an energetic component to it. Six of my clients took me up on it and booked sessions with me. Each one of these clients gave positive feedback after their sessions were over. This let me know that even though I could not see them in person, I was still able to give them hope in that they could receive the power of Bowen Therapy distantly.
