We recently connected with Brenda Angel and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brenda, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of the most meaningful projects I have worked on would be the Eco-tianguis Illustration I designed for PC4EJ (People’s Collective for Environmental Justice). They are a non-profit organization focusing on environmental justice and creating sustainable systems to protect public health. Earlier this year( PC4EJ) reached out looking for an illustration for their first annual Eco-tianguis. The Eco-tianguis was an event where the community could support the local economy and receive information regarding hyper-consumption and the impacts it has on our community.
Designing the eco-tianguis illustration for PC4EJ was an impactful project as it allowed me to showcase and support the community I grew up in, San Bernardino. As an artist, I am committed to giving back to my community, and I strongly believe in the power of art to raise awareness and address issues. This illustration captured the essence of local vendors and the community coming together to support each other and providing valuable information about the changes affecting our communities and environment.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Brenda Angel, an artist, designer, and muralist based in San Bernardino, CA. I was born and raised here, holding a special place in my heart. I decided to remain here and pursue my creative pursuits because of the significance it has to me.
The power of colors and their ability to evoke emotions has always fascinated me. That is why I specialize in creating lively, daring, and captivating character work that comes alive in my designs. Starting with a graphic design major in college, I explored various art courses and eventually delved into painting after graduation. From there, I began creating patches for clothing, which became my initial area of recognition.
Over time, my love for painting grew, so I began creating large canvas fabric paintings. Creating these large canvas paintings opened many doors for me over the years. That is when I realized that creating murals would be something I would want to pursue. I had my first mural opportunity back in 2022. The artists and owners of a studio named Creative grounds based here in San Bernardino reached out about a mural opportunity. Ever since, I have created murals for omnitrans, The alley gallery in Pomona, and assisted other artists with their murals.
As an artist, the ultimate goal is to construct a world that magnifies happiness and encourages people to delve into their imaginations. I believe art can transport us to enchanting realms and unlock countless possibilities. Every brush stroke and every color is intentionally chosen to create an inviting and inspiring atmosphere. I want my viewers to experience a sense of awe and accompany me on their creative journey.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout my creative journey, I’ve faced moments of doubt about whether to continue pursuing it long term. However, reflecting on my past accomplishments and the progress I’ve made always helps bring me back. In one particular instance, when I struggled with the concept of a painting, I initially wanted to abandon the idea. Yet, after taking some time away and considering how much effort I had already invested, I found the motivation to push through and complete the piece in time for my art show.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, creating and sharing art allows me to connect with others on a deeper level. It also gives me the opportunity to use my creativity to make a difference and simultaneously address issues that affect our communities. I am constantly amazed by the power of art to transform and uplift, and it is incredibly fulfilling to be a part of that process.
