We were lucky to catch up with Bree Young recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bree, thanks for joining us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I always knew I wanted to be an Entrepreneur. Ever since I was a little girl, I was making little side hussles to make a buck. My first real job was when I was 14 years old, I was banquet serving at a local reception hall. One day the florist came up and asked for someone to help her, needless to say I never went back to serving. That day I fell in love with all things flowers. I began to dream of the day I would have my own floral business.
Fast forward about 10 years, my son was about a year old. I was working a 9-5 corporate job, in a cubicle, answering phones my whole shift. I was MISERABLE, someone was will my sweet boy all day, I didn’t like what I was doing with my time or my “career” and I felt like I was slowly letting my dream go, everytime I clocked into work.
Finally, I had had enough, without much of a plan or idea of what my business would look like. I quit my corporate job and opened my business all in one day. I had no money, on a single income and still living in my parents basement. But I knew I had to make it work, for myself, for my son and for all my future. I was determined to succeed.
My goal that year was to do 12 weddings, by Summer I had doubled my goal and had two hired employees. Working out of my parent garage, my business just kept growing. It was such a huge risk for myself and my son, but I would not have it any other way. With my business there were SO many ups and downs and a lot of days that I wanted to throw the towel in and quit. I had to keep pushing thru and keeping my head up.
I finally get to live in my passion everyday and share my love for design with every customer. I love what I do and I love bringing peoples dreams to life thru flowers.
Bree, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Breezy Floral specializes in bringing the wedding of your dreams come to life! We also do funerals, dances and every day arrangements.
I love a challenge and pushing myself to knew heights! Learning new skills and when a bride/groom comes to me with an idea that I have never seen before.
I think the thing that sets me apart from other florists is my number one goal is to make sure all your arrangements are one of a kind. Unique is my favorite word! I want to make sure I put a personal touch to it so it’s not the same Pinterest bouquet you see over and over. It’s going to stand out and be just for them.
I am the most proud of all my employees that I get to teach the skill of floristry. I love giving them the tools and watching them blossom (see what I did there) into this amazing designer.
The main thing to know about Breezy Floral is we make your day EASY. We don’t want you to have to worry. Weddings are stressful enough. Let us take the flowers and make it amazing with no additional stress. We love what we do!
How did you build your audience on social media?
My top way to get new clients: Referrals! Happy customers make new customers. If you take care of the ones you have, they are bound to share with all their friends and loved ones. I always ask them to go thru my social channels. I want that to be the first stop.
When I was first starting out I did a lot of giveaways and photo shoots to try to grow my presence on social media. When I was a little more established I did pay for a couple of paid advertising on Instagram and Facebook. That definitely drives a lot of traffic on your page. There are so many Wedding Facebook pages where Brides go to find Vendor’s and that also helps so much!
I post as much as I can, of course it seems like with a social media driven world. It’s a full time job trying to keep up with it. One day I hope to hire someone to do it for me.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I would say my top suggestion is make sure there is an open line of communication between you and your team. I make sure they always know they can talk to me about anything.
I think another thing is always building them up! Whether it’s with a bonus, taking them to dinner or a team building activity. They have to know how much I appreciate them.
I know I’m bias but I have the best team ever! And I make sure to remind them of that as much as I can.
