Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bree Torti. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Bree thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I like to take it back to the old school ways, of pen to paper. A personal note/thank you card mailed. Studies even show when you receive a hand written card v.s a curated templet or email , you gain more retention, response, and positive feedback by the hand written card. It’s such a staple of mine to really make the client feel a special kind of way from the moment they are greeted to my salon suite to the moment they leave . I respect and honor whatever they choose to talk about with me, but I have this little gift of becoming close to most my clients in some form of relating to a little piece of what they discuss, which makes it set the environment more comfortable and a safe space. I really enjoy the relationships I’ve made by being behind the chair.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Well for starters I am born and raised San Diego, I absolutely love it and I don’t think I could ever leave! I got into the beauty industry from a passion that was established by playing with my parents hair at age three. Fast forward that passion never fizzled, it was ignited by drive and focus. Now professionally a stylist of fifteen years, I’ve had my own salon suite for three, I absolutely love having my own space where I get to curate my own sanctuary of a toxic free products, light and neutral tones, uplifting energy, and great music. I was always in amazing big open air salons, but to find myself in my own bubble with just my client and I . So this suited me perfectly having my own salon suite. Being your own boss, you do learn a lot , more difficult than easy lessons but it all leads to becoming an even better version of myself by the growth I’ve learned through the years of being on my own. I’d say what has helped is creating a structured planner on my phone from the moment I wake up to the moment I lay my head on the pillow. And a lot of coffee, and Celsius ;) I think what I am most proud of is knowing I truly love what I do each and every day, I wake up excited, and for me I am the most indecisive person but for me knowing what I wanted to do for a career path that was one thing I 100% knew I was going to do, I enjoy helping others, gaining their confidence back through the beauty of hair. For any potential clients I love to see The transformations whether that’s through hair extensions or hair color I love seeing the reactions , it’s the best feeling to see you happy and confident.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I truly admire my father who is a successful business owner of 34 years, and what I have seen through his experience and knowledge is the relationships you have with your clientele makes them want to come back to you because they truly enjoy who YOU are as a person, so my strategy isn’t really anything it’s something that’s always been within me where I absolutely love getting to know people make them feel comfortable and confident and have amazing conversations and hold space filled with positivity and laughter because at the end of the day we could use more of that and by having a space that creates that I believe my clients come back because they enjoy and love the vibes. I gain new clients because of them because they are all word of mouth so I thank my clients always for referrals , all that leads back to the relationship of the client and I. That isn’t a strategy. That is a gift.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I never was one to enjoy reading books, I’d be the one in high school reading the back of the book or spark notes to get by on my test. I’ve come a very long way haha. I absolutely love podcasts and self help books. I find by reading any kind of self help book it actually makes you become an elite stylist by helping when clients come to you and open up , keep in mind hairstylist are also “hairapist” haha! I try to dive deep In health and wellness, entrepreneurship and self-help podcasts and books. To name a few podcast. I love – on purpose with jay shetty, The skinny Confidential Him& Her podcast , Ed Mylett show, Huberman Lab. Books – The four agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, The power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, Atomic Habits by James Clear , and the first books that forever changed my way of thinking was all the books by Gabriel Bernstein. I also find journaling has helped me grow not only for personal but for goal setting and to stay on track for business. A great journal is called The Five Minute Journal.
