We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bree Bridgette. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bree below.
Hi Bree, thanks for joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
As a business owner, I genuinely find joy in what I do. My business is still fairly new, and while there are certainly challenges, the excitement of building something from the ground up keeps me motivated. That said, I do often think about what it might be like to have a regular job. It’s a thought that crosses my mind more often than I’d like to admit.
Just the other day, I had one of those moments. I was sitting at my desk, surrounded by a whirlwind of tasks—marketing, editing videos, recording content, managing contracts, and uploading everything to various platforms. The weight of it all felt particularly heavy that day. I found myself daydreaming about a 9-to-5 job where I could just clock in, do my work, and clock out, without the constant pressure of being responsible for every single aspect of a business.
But then I took a step back. I remembered how I felt in my previous jobs: stifled and unfulfilled. Those roles never sparked the same passion that entrepreneurship does for me, even on the tough days. Sure, there’s a lot on my plate, and I haven’t made a dollar in my business yet, but I see the potential ahead. That “yet” keeps me grounded and focused. I know that the win is coming, and I’m determined to hold on until it arrives.
In the end, I wouldn’t trade this journey for a six-figure salary in a regular job. The freedom to create, innovate, and ultimately shape my own destiny far outweighs the security of a paycheck. Each challenge I face strengthens my resolve and fuels my passion. I may have my moments of doubt, but they only serve to remind me why I chose this path in the first place.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Bree, and I’m the host of No Dress Code, a podcast that’s all about genuine conversations. I got into podcasting because I have a deep curiosity about people—their stories, their businesses, and what makes them tick. I believe that understanding others is one of the most meaningful ways to connect, and I wanted to create a space where these real conversations could happen without judgment.
My aim is to delve into the unique journeys of my guests, exploring what makes them who they are. I want each episode to feel as easy and carefree as a Sunday afternoon, not just informative for the listeners but also enjoyable for the guests. I strive to stray away from mundane topics like who pays what or what someone should be doing but isn’t. Instead, I focus on building and supporting my guests, fostering an environment where they can share their insights openly and authentically.
What sets No Dress Code apart is this commitment to creating a non-judgmental atmosphere. I want to highlight the nuances of each person’s experience and celebrate their individuality. It’s about encouraging dialogue that feels genuine and relatable.
I’m incredibly proud of the personal and professional growth I’ve experienced over the past year. Hosting this podcast has pushed me out of my comfort zone in ways I never anticipated. As an introvert, I’ve had to step beyond my typical boundaries, which has not only enriched my own life but also enhanced the conversations I have with my guests.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that No Dress Code is a celebration of real stories and authentic connections. I’m here to foster a community where everyone feels valued and heard, and I’m dedicated to supporting my guests and listeners alike. Join me as we explore these incredible journeys together—because ultimately, our stories are all we have, and I’m excited to share them with you!
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Funny enough, I kickstarted my business using my income tax refund. At the time, I was working dead-end jobs that felt unfulfilling, and saving up enough money to invest in my dreams was tough. Life has a way of throwing curveballs, and I found it challenging to set aside funds for starting my own venture.
When tax season rolled around, I saw an opportunity. I waited for the perfect sale to purchase the essential equipment I believed I needed to get started. It wasn’t a one-time investment; it took a few tax returns to piece everything together! One year, I used my refund to buy a Mac and the editing software I needed. The following year, I invested in more equipment.
It was definitely a process, but once I had the basics—what I felt were the foundational tools—I began to buy additional items as I could afford them. Things like lights, mic stands, and backdrops gradually found their way into my setup. I didn’t have everything I needed right from the start, but I learned to scale as we grew.
This approach allowed me to be resourceful and make thoughtful decisions about what to invest in, ensuring I could expand my capabilities without breaking the bank. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made so far, and I’m excited about continuing to build on this foundation as my business evolves!
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There have been several resources that have significantly shaped my management and entrepreneurial philosophy.
One standout moment for me was watching a video featuring Issa Rae, where she quotes her friend Amy Aniobi. Amy paraphrases a powerful insight: “People are always looking to network up, but really, it’s about networking across—who’s next to you, who do you have access to?” This perspective resonated deeply with me and has influenced how I approach building my podcast.
I realized that by focusing on those around me, I could create meaningful connections and have genuine conversations that matter. It’s helped me shape my episodes and engage with people from various backgrounds, all while maintaining a judgment-free environment.
There are plenty of individuals like me who are seeking their start in the industry, and I understand how daunting it can be for people to take a chance on you when you’re just starting out. However, networking across not only broadens opportunities but also fosters collaboration and mutual support. When we lift each other up, everyone benefits.
This philosophy has guided my approach to networking and collaboration, allowing me to build a community that thrives on shared experiences and growth. It’s a reminder that the value of connections often lies in the people right next to us, rather than just those at the top.
