We recently connected with Bree Banuelos and have shared our conversation below.
Bree, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew at a very young age that I wanted to have a creative career, but when you grow up in a small town like I did anything artsy was more or less a hobby and not a job. I had to rely on myself and listen to my intuition to make my dreams come true despite the naysayers.
Bree, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a wardrobe stylist based out of Los Angeles. I work on everything from movies and music videos, to ad campaigns and artist shoots. I believe style is such a brilliant form of self expression and I honestly feel very blessed to be able to make a living expressing not only myself, but others. I love being able to collaborate with a client and fellow artists to help bring the vision to life. To be able to tell a story visually. My Mexican heritage is a very big part of who I am and is a huge influence on the way I view the world artistically. I think something special to Los Angeles specifically, is that it’s a melting pot of Mexican culture and there is this resurgence of art being made that really reflects that whether it’s through designers, musicians, writers, etc. and it’s so inspiring.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
No matter where you live, there is a local artist community. I think supporting your local artist by buying something handmade at a farmers market, watching an acoustic show at a cafe, etc is obviously a great way to support financially. It can also be as simple as posting someone’s work (and giving them credit for it) on social media. That’s a very big way of showing support to the creative community. The world would be a boring place without art.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I like to read autobiographies. There’s something about someone telling their own story and discussing the struggles they went through on their journey to get where they are today. It gives me that motivation I need when life feels tough. Like hey, everyone struggles. It’s about making it through that, and if this person can do it, so can I.
