We were lucky to catch up with Breccan Conroy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Breccan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’ve always been a creative, just by nature. It was just a matter of time before acting found me. I like to say that I woke up and decided I was going to be an actor. It sounds more fun that way. I always knew I was meant for more than a 9-5, I think all creatives do. I felt I had a greater purpose even as a young child. School was never for me, I dropped out of high school. I knew that there was something out there that was going to feed my soul. Something that was going to feed this passion that was untapped inside of me that a traditional route just wouldn’t. So, I took a chance.
I always had a draw to movies and TV, it was a means to live outside of myself, a way to feel what maybe I couldn’t feel or see in this given reality. I just never knew or thought that acting could be something I would spend the rest of my life pursuing. Yet, here we are.
Not only did acting become my passion, it became the love of my life and an obsession I never knew I needed, ecstasy. And wow, I have the coolest job in the world!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well, I’m Breccan Conroy, I’m from Denver, CO and I’m an actor. I always have way too many hobbies, I love trying new things and pushing myself past my limits. I have always had a knack for sports. I love to sing and will belt out tunes in the car with no shame. Is it always great? Probably not, but if you ever need a karaoke partner I am your guy. I like to believe I’m pretty funny too and trust me if you get me talking I will talk your ears off!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is connection.
I was auditioning for an open call. I was checking in and I was asked if I was there for a film called “Cancel me” or for potluck. I said, “Oh, I’m here for ‘Cancel Me’, I didn’t bring any food. I didn’t know there was going to be a potluck.” I thought it was kind of weird that there was a potluck at an audition and I didn’t see any food but I didn’t think much of it. It was a cold read audition so I was given the sides and read them for a second and went into the room. Then after I was asked if I also wanted to audition for another film ‘Potluck’, my heart sank. I thought ‘Potluck’ was an actual potluck! After I read for them, I told them about what I said getting checked in and they were cracking up. Those are connections that will never fade. I ended up making a good enough, kind of odd impression and the odds were in my favor and I got both parts! Building relationships with an audience is the most personally rewarding thing. Being able to reach an audience when performing or otherwise, even just being one person in a room, on an emotional and personal level is just unbelievably rewarding. Even in an audition room whether or not I get the part. Then on top of that, meeting so many different people, on and off set and making valuable, genuine connections is absolutely amazing! To feed the human need to connect is just an amazing feeling. This industry is so much more than just work and booking a job. As an actor and honestly any creative we are out of work a lot, for me it’s the connection that drives and continues to reignite the passion of my creativity.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn?
A lesson I had to really unlearn was to stop comparing other peoples progress/successes to mine and to stop rushing myself. It’s so easy to get caught up on how other people are succeeding and lose sight of enjoying where I am right now. One way of thinking that I love and continue to keep close to me is, “I can, so I will, so I am”. Basically meaning, know that you can get to where you want to go even if you don’t have all the resources or means to get there right now, let go of your fears and comparisons and just do. I may not get that part but I’ll get the next one and I may not meet that person right now but that doesn’t take away from my journey, my hard work and my talent. Everything happens in its own timing and in all the best ways. I know I will reach my goals but in the meantime, I might as well enjoy the ride and fall in love with the discipline to get there.
