We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Breanna Wiley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
BreAnna, appreciate you joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
So I have 6 brothers (0 sisters), and grew up playing sports throughout grade school and college I’ve always been physically tough, but mental toughness was something I’ve constantly worked on.
In college, I suffered two serious injuries- fractured ankle my sophomore year and a torn PCL my junior year which caused me to miss the conference tournament and the Allstar game.
These injuries took on me mentally and physically and I had to tap into my mental toughness since I was physically unable to being in a boot and on crutches.
During this time, while rehabbing, I decided to post my recovery journey on social media. I became physically and mentally stronger, and it felt great. I had a lot of people from back home reaching out to me about training them. I took a chance by starting a $5 Bootcamp back home in west Memphis, Arkansas and even got to collaborate with local apartment complexes- training residents in their gym.
As time went by I got a job i opportunity at a gym in Houston, and I’ve been in Texas ever since grinding and flourishing.
BreAnna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hi everyone! My name is BreAnna Wiley (most call me Bre or BreFit). I am originally from West Memphis, Arkansas, but have been a Houston, Texas resident for almost 10 years.
I got into personal training and health coaching during my senior year of college. I was a Health, Physical Ed, and Recreation major, with a focus in kinesiology and human performance. I played basketball all throughout college and always had a strong passion for sports, weight lifting, and strength training.
During my sophomore year and junior year I sustained injuries that required me to go through physical therapy. During this time, I suffered from depression, mentally and physically as I was unable to maintain my active lifestyle. Being injured and going through PT with one of the best Physical Therapy Organizations (Ochsner in New Orleans, Louisiana), taught me a lot about the body, training, therapy, mental toughness, and my overall experience recovering from injuries sparked a fire in me to want to help others maintain an active lifestyle, as well as prevent injuries when training.
I have now been personal training since May of 2015, in-person, and online and virtually since 2017. My consistency has allowed me to expand and start my active wear and accessory brand BREFITACTIVE, along with launching my training app. I have been able to help hundreds of women transform mentally and physically.
On my journey, I have faced many ups and downs, but overall, I am flourishing and have some big news coming soon.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I believe that I am a very resilient person. During COVID19, gyms shut down, clients cancelled, I lost revenue, and it was an overall stressful time. However, I kept showing up for my loyal clients, myself, and my business. I continued to market myself and business, and promote my services.
Because of my dedication, I was able to hit almost 80 clients online during quarantine and get women moving and active.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think that being adaptable and open-minded are two of the most helpful things that have helped me stay afloat and successful in my field. Clients don’t always show up, things happen that are out of my control, and business could be slow, but being able to adapt to the current climate of the industry allows me to adapt and adjust.
