We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Breanna Powell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Breanna, thanks for joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
ABSOLUTELY! When I started my business, I was literally working 7 days a freakin week. I was burnt out and exhausted, and thought that was just the way it had to be.
Now, I have it written it into my contract that me and my team will take a FULL WEEK off every other month in order to just REST. We are nothing when we give all of ourselves to everything and everybody – so I had to start being proactive for the benefit of everyone we work with.
Sometimes it’s a vacation, sometimes it’s a staycation and other times it ain’t nothing other than me just sitting in my house not working. That’s vacation enough for me!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the owner of The Social Hive, a Social Media Management agency where I get busy on social media so brands/businesses don’t have to. I create engaging imagery, story-telling copy and help brands build their community on social media so that they can focus on building their business.
I am known for creating dope content for myself and my brands! So, transitioning into owning this agency has been so much fun as I learn more about myself as a creative and a small business owner. I am proud of myself for doing this thing scared…because I was/am so afraid of the unknown; but I’m doing it anyway!
What sets me apart from other folks is my ability and willingness to be open and vulnerable about my journey (personal and professional). I pride myself on being real about my experiences because I want to help others in any way that I can, so I share my life with my audiences with that goal in mind.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
July 2021, I quit my job as a Social Worker – I literally got 2 degrees in this field and thought that I would be in it forever, so I was incredibly shocked when I had to make this decision. I had to pivot my entire life in a very short time! I had no intentions of becoming a full-time entrepreneur but now, I’ve accepted that this was God’s plan and I’ve been thriving in this space ever since.
Don’t be afraid to pivot and to step into something new. There is so much power in believing you are capable of succeeding at something you’ve never done before!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
REFERRALS! Omg. Literally about 80% of my clients have come from word of mouth and let me tell you, that feels SO good. To know that I’ve worked so hard and fostered such great relationships with clients that they go and tell someone else to come work with me is an amazing feeling – 10/10 would recommend!
