We were lucky to catch up with Breana Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Breana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s one of the most important lessons you learned in school?
During my senior year of high school, I had my required appointment with the guidance counselor about my goals and future aspirations. However, there was nothing said in the meeting that I really resonated with. The talk was mostly about going to college, so that’s what I did. I went to college without any real plan for what I wanted to do. I originally wanted to study anesthesiology, but only because I knew that career made a lot of money. When I started my classes, I did everything right. I took notes, studied, did my homework yet I still was falling behind in class and not doing well on my tests. I switched to the undecided major, but did not enjoy any of my classes. After the first semester I left school. Back home, I worked to make money but had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Until I found cosmetology school! After I toured the school, I immediately knew that I wanted to start school there because of the way they talked about catering to all learning styles. I knew that I was a hands-on learner, so when they said kinesthetic learning was something they specialized in, I knew without a doubt that was where I wanted to go. Even though cosmetology was not the career I ended up in, I still learned so much and had the best time I’ve ever had going to school. That entire experience taught me that college can be a great tool for people who have a set plan, but it isn’t for everyone. If you don’t enjoy the subjects you are learning, you will never really retain the information. I always painted my nails but never saw it as a career because i had no idea trade school was even an option. Every time I talk to people younger than me, I always give them the advice to make a plan before going to college. When I was in high school, I thought it was such a weird idea to take a year off, but now I highly suggest it! Taking the time to think about what exactly you want to do and how to get there is such an important step to making college successful for you.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Breana Brown, I am 25 years old. I am a cake decorator and created EZ Breezy Eats with the support of my mom. After years of being a nail technician, I happened to apply for cake decorator position at a local grocery store. Despite having no experience, the manager who interviewed me hired me on the spot because they recognized my love and passion for art through painting nails. Thinking about that now really makes me grateful to that first job for giving me a chance and setting me on the path that led me to my passion! EZ Breezy Eats mostly specializes in cakes, cupcakes, cake truffles and whatever homemade desserts the customer desires. We named our business EZ Breezy Eats because eventually we want to expand to more than just desserts. Once we find a storefront we would love to start with basic sandwiches and deli services, then eventually build upon that and start offering more intricate foods and catering services. Our clients love EZ Breezy Eats because we cater to their specific tastes and style. Our most popular product is our famous cake truffles! We have several different flavors ranging from our basic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and red velvet to our new specialty flavors like strawberry and caramel mocha. We also take recommendations from eager customers for new flavors. As a small business, we take pride in giving our customers a voice while building our company to be the biggest and best it can be!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My mom and I are extremely grateful because we have so much support from our friends and family. They have been such a big part in getting our name out there! Word of mouth has been such a powerful tool for expanding our range. Our cake truffles especially are so shareable and snackable! As soon as they try one, they’re hooked! One cake truffle is the entire reason EZ Breezy Eats has expanded to now baking out of Brewer’s Alley! A staple restaurant and bar located in historic downtown Frederick Maryland. I gave my brother some free cake truffle samples to hand out at work and next thing you know I’m emailing with Greg Brown, the owner of Brewer’s Alley and the up-and-coming Bentztown! Our dreams are coming true one cake truffle at a time.
How’d you meet your business partner?
It might be kind of funny to answer this question when my business partner is my mom, but she is the main reason EZ Breezy Eats exists in the first place! My mom has always been my biggest supporter. I’m so grateful to have someone in my life who encourages me to be the best that I can be. She is the best role model I could possibly have. After moving from Guyana, she settled in Frederick Maryland, where she worked at a stock company called Nasdaq for over 20 years. Soon after a well-deserved early retirement, she brought up the idea of starting a business. She’s never been the type to stand still for too long. She began illustrating our business plan immediately and we were a certified business within the next couple of months. Her bright spirit and positive attitude are some of the main reasons why our business is and will continue to flourish.
