We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Breahna Whitehair a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Breahna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always had an artistic desire. Creating, whether it be with paints, collage, pottery, welding, wood etc. has always brought me joy. I come from a creative family with a low risk attitude. That being said, I never really thought pottery was an option for me, what with the start up costs, space for equipment and so on. After 10 years of having something missing in my life, I decided to take the plunge and go for pottery And haven’t looked back since and I’ve had my business now for going on 5 years.
Breahna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a 31 year old new mother with many hustles. My greatest joy is Mile High Mud, my ceramics business. Juggling a full time job plus my multiple side businesses can be challenging but making art is non negotiable and continues to be a priority in my life. I’m a down to earth, fiery redhead, that brings my passion and goofiness into my art. I love to grow in my knowledge, ability and craft in all aspects of life and to never become stagnant.
I love working with color and raw clay to show the natural beauty of clay along with the bright colors of my glazes. I also enjoy sculpting fruits, ears and other fun non conventional handles.
I’m proud of my drive and hard working attitude to achieve my goals.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when my pieces find homes that bring the client as much joy as the maker. Customers that find you years later and want more of your work is an incredible feeling.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Of course, shop small whenever possible. Each purchase brightens a makers day and supports the business to keep going. Additionally spreading the word about creatives is the best way to boost the community and help artists not just survive but thrive.
