We recently connected with Brea Holmes and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brea thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I wanted to pursue costume design because of a mixture of dance and my love for film. I grew up always in the dance studio, so I was around costumes all the time for performance and recitals. In addition to that, my parents and my grandmother, on my mother’s side, love movies so I grew up watching everything from musicals to anime.
The movie that made me want to go into film was the movie, The King & I. I remember looking at the tradition Thai costume in the play scene, and I was like, “I want to learn how to make that!”. Thus, here I am today.

Brea, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a St. Louis native who moved to California to pursue my career as a Costume Designer. I attended Woodbury University in Burbank, CA and received my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Fashion Design with an emphasis in Costume Design in 2016.
Since graduating, I have worked on numerous projects in Theatre, Film, and TV. In which, I have had the pleasure of working for companies such as Marvel, Disney plus, Tidal, Universal Music Mexico, TNT, and Lionsgate.
Currently, I am a member of IATSE Local 892 Costume Designer’s Guild and Local 768.
What definitely sets me apart from others is my versatility, resilience and curiosity.
I am very proud of how far I have come. I was blessed to be one of the Assistant Costume Designers on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was one of the biggest projects I have ever worked on in my career thus far.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is inspiring others, especially ones that look like me. I grew up with limited role models in my field, and I want to be a role model to a little black girl/boy/person. I want them to know that you can do what I do too.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One goal in particular is to work on the Static Shock movie…..There were talks about it, and I just want to put it out there….if you need a Costume Designer….I’M YOUR GIRL!
