We were lucky to catch up with Brea Copes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brea, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My most meaningful project has been the start of my ( In My Garage ) series. after becoming a home owner a year ago i wanted to start to throw shows in my garage for local artists like myself wanting to create in an environment that is safe and to be heard spreading more underground music. This was very important for me because the community we have of music artists in Va, norfolk virginia to be exact is growing but the opportunities for artists to perform are pretty limited. i wanted everyone to feel confident and comfortable in a loving space with people that want to see them succeed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My names Brea. i’m an independent singer/songwriter. i’ve always wanted to do music but started taking it more seriously in 2016 when i released my first song. my music career soon picked up after moving back to Virginia where i began to do local shows, which landed me opportunities performing out our state including DC, william and mary college, Old dominion university and other places. the services i currently provide are creative direction, Features on tapes and songwriting. i’m also a published author with digital books on my website for purchase, that feature some of my latest songs and the link to my youtube where you can find my music videos ( www.breamc.com ) i think what sets me apart from other artists is that, i don’t see creation as competition i want to help everyone to create the best art they can because when im not here anymore i want my art to be remembered way beyond my years. i’m most proud of finding my sound and crafting it over the last few years, getting ready to work on my debut album. For anyone that hasn’t found me yet, i’d like for you to know that i hope whatever you hear from me be that my music or my poetry book, touches you and makes you reflect.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Me, joining the military was the hardest decision of my life in 2019. but looking back on my time thought process, i didn’t have the money nor the resources to afford to carry myself as an artist or even book sessions to record my music. i wanted to buy my own equipment so i could do it myself and at the time i just wasn’t in the financial space to do so, so i believe joining changed the outcome of my life entirely. i don’t know where i would be or what i would be doing had i passed on the opportunity to get my life in order to be able to do what i love.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
the most rewarding thing about being a creative for me is when new people find my music, people that don’t know me from anywhere and they’ll tell me i helped them or that they have my song on repeat and it reminds me that i do have a calling and a purpose much bigger than myself.
