We were lucky to catch up with Bre Terrell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bre, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I first came up with the idea of “The Kickback” because I’m a laid back person and when my clients come, I want them to kick back with me. I wanted to provide a space or an environment where my clients feel comfortable enough to take a load off and relax.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Bre Terrell and I’m a licensed cosmetologist and educator. I’ve been in the industry literally since I was 5 but professionally for 13 years.
I grew a love for the beauty industry watching my grandparents operate their beauty/ barbershop as well as watching my aunt style hair as well.
I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from many people in my industry is that I make it a point to get into the mind of a client and operate based off of what would benefit them.
I’m most proud that I have been able to be consistent with my clients and meet/exceed their expectations. It’s a joy serving them and enhancing the beauty that’s already there!
My brand is simple- clean and neat classic hair. I care about the integrity of your hair so I will always make suggestions and help guide my clients with their hair care.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
One day my husband gave me the money I needed to purchase a chair, station, mirror and a few other necessities. I started taking new clients soon after I got everything set up.
Soon, I started making enough money to really transform my salon space! In a course of a year I went from styling hair in a corner of my room to installing new floors, paint, decor, and much more.
I’m so glad it wasn’t rushed- I was able to really appreciate the process along the way.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media was not a thing when I first started doing hair! I took a break from doing hair full time and hopped back in at the beginning of 2020.
My business started, paused, and flourished in the middle of a pandemic! We were on lock down so it was the perfect time to post work I’d done previously. Once lockdown was over I started taking models for new services I was learning and took great photos to gain some traction online.
I spoke with one of my clients who was good at marketing and she really taught me some valuable lessons in how social media works!
Ultimately, if you know nothing else about social media, know this- clear photos, post consistently, engage with others, be ok with looking silly to others (only you know your vision)!
