Today we’d like to introduce you to Bre Russell
Hi Bre, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a super creative person. As a kid, I’d jump from hobby to hobby just to keep myself creating as much as possible! I did everything from artistic gymnastics, dance, & art classes, to photoshop, music, and more. I just didn’t realize that I could make a living by being creative. In 2020, after my pursuit of a corporate 9-5 job didn’t go to plan, I reluctantly decided to go back to school. On a whim I chose “Graphic Design” as my major and immediately fell in love with it! The rest is history… after graduating I have been working full time as a Graphic Designer, with amazing small businesses across the US. It’s insane to think that little me really had no idea that this was even a possibility… and now I get to live it every day!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road… by any means, but it has been a rewarding one! From friends & family members discouraging me from pursuing a creative career, to clients refusing to pay me, & unanticipated financially dry seasons… I’ll be the first to admit it’s been hard! Working for yourself is mentally challenging because you are everything… the office manager, social media manager, senior designer, client communications, etc. I’ve come to realize that it’s impossible to avoid all struggles, it’s better to embrace the idea that they’re part of the journey!
As you know, we’re big fans of Bre Russell Design. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business offers Graphic Design services to small businesses across the country! I specialize in branding design… so these services look like anything from logos, to color palettes, branding guidelines, websites, etc. I am known for authentically and strategically representing businesses through visual elements. I am so proud of the relationships I have with my clients! I feel like it can be hard to find a designer that cares about more than just your business, and I strive to be a designer and friend to my clients.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
If you work for yourself, or remotely in any capacity… I highly recommend frequenting a local coffee shop/cafe. You’d be surprised how many fellow business owners, and creatives you’ll meet by just being a familiar face somewhere local! Also, it’s kinda a given… but be approachable and also approach other people. You can’t network with people you never talk to!
